Hi guys.
As above, I've just purchased my first welder, and have been checking this site every now and then for the last few months. I chose the Powertec 250c (used) as it should be suitable for my main needs (as listed below) as well as any heavier fabrication in future.
First of all I'd like to say what a great site this is, I've scoured the guides many times and it really is a credit to you Malcolm.
I'm carrying out a restoration of a 1983 Golf, and need the welder mainly for fitting the transmission tunnel from a Rallye Golf, for Syncro 4wd, and fabricating new mounts for the rear subframe. I'll also use the welder to carry out some exterior panel work and repairs to the Golf, such as fitting a lower valance, front panel, scuttle and perhaps roof skin, as well as plating up any redundant holes in the engine bay.
I'd like to give the welder a 'service' so to speak, replacing the liner, shroud and tip, and could do with a drive roll for 0.6 wire (currently fitted with 0.8, drive roll is reversible for 0.8/1.0 wire). I'm not sure if these parts are Lincoln specific, or if parts from different manufacturers/models are interchangeable, so at a crossroads as to where to obtain these parts from
I also require a bit of guidance around the best gas to use, whether to go for pure Argon/CO2, or a mix like BOC's Argoshield Light (I'm aware of the VZi offer BOC were running, and am keeping my eye on the topic in case it is re-run).
Apologies if you feel this would be best placed in the sub-fora, i.e. Lincoln sub-forum and gas sub-forum etc. I'll move to separate sub-fora if necessary.
Many thanks,
John
