I bought a broken wurlitzer jukebox taking 45 singles with a view to taking all the broken insides out and making a somewhat theatrical mp3 jukebox, and after mechanical tinkeration managed to fix it instead. Its too nice to repurpose now so I needed to fill it with stuff I wanted to listen to and use it instead.
45 singles come with a small hole in the middle to suit record decks unless they've been in a jukebox already, so I needed a way to open these small holes out to the jukebox sized ones. You can buy a commercial "dinker" as theyre called, but their either expensive or the quality is a bit spotty.
So I made this, the punch is sized accurately to the centre hole and formed with a lip on its outside edge to sheer the vinyl of the record. The recess in the die was just turned to match accurately (-ish, within 0.01 of the od of the punch) on the lathe.
The punch of course has a leader to centralize it on the record as it goes in, and then locate the punch into the die accurately also, this lets the sheared hole be on centre relative to the original spindle hole.
Die is a piece of random stainless that has been kicking round in the scrap box for years and punch is a offcut xc38 (its close to en16t I think) I had from another project. I haven't hardened either piece.
If you need to make one, measure up a old single, make the leader the size of the centre hole and the punch the size of the centre of your jukebox. Theyre easy done on a lathe in a hour or two. Please don't ask me to make more, I haven't got materials or time at the moment sorry.
I use it in a flypress but Ive tested it with a FBH on a big surface and it works fine in that mode also.
Seems to work ok
For the ones without a label on the centre bit, they are a bit more of a challenge, Ive tried masking tape to reduce the risk but they still shatter like this. You need to make a trepanning tool for these if you replicate. Happily I only broke some michael jackson and weird 80's pop I didn't want to listen to anyway testing the theories
Must admit I was nervous doing this one. But if your also a owner of the invaders must die prodigy collectors edition green vinyl box set, yours is now worth more as theres one less in original unmolested unplayed collector condition.Things have to live and make me happy for their original purpose or it might as well be stamp collecting.
