Jones Shipman 540 - things to check

As I've posted elsewhere, I'm looking for a punch and die grinder, or possibly a surface grinder.
A J&S 540 has just shown up on FBMP.
Can anybody tell me from the pics if it's a complete non- starter for some reason,(I wouldn't have known about Boxfor TUD for example without asking) or things to check if/when I get t see it?

I know it can be a risk putting stuff on here in case someone beats me to the deal , but:

I reckon you're going to expose yourself to a whole lot of potential problems buying something like that just to grind some punch and die tooling. I'd be looking for something much simpler, manual, like an eagle grinder in good condition.

Thanks @6ply - I was thinking it was slightly OTT, but I'm just trying to find something to get a really smooth die plate, and flat ends across the punch pins.

I didn't know Eagle grinders existed - but they look absolutely ideal, along with being smaller footprint, and less to go wrong with automated traverses. I've been trying to find a search term I can use to find something suitable - and 'Surface Grinder', Punch and Die Grinder' or 'Vertical Grinder' appeared to be closest - I will be adding 'Eagle Grinder' to the list.

Punch and die grinders are usually simple devices with a stout round column and a grind head that swings arround it holding a cupped wheel over the work piece which is clamped to the machine bed.

That 540 looks to be a bargain at the price but will take much more setting up for your job than is necessary.

There was one listed recently in eBay spots. Somewhere near Reading for about £30 iirc.

..and that's what I started looking for, but when I didn't come across one in 5 minutes flat, then scope creep came in, and I started thinking of good reasons why I needed something bigger and better... ..which of course I absolutely don't.

For your limited use, could you repurpose an old pillar drill base and column, plus a swing mount for a bench grinder, with the spindle mounted vertically? It wouldn't be difficult to add some form of z axis adjustment.

I suppose I could put something in a pillar drill and use an XY vice - but I was after something a tiny bit better.
Is that what cup grinding wheels are used for?

Well a 'proper' punch and die grinder would have a segmented grinding disk but still essentially a cup wheel.
