Jones Shipman 540 help

Just collected a 540P in exceptionally good condition. Chap said it was running fine and I could see it working. I was late picking it up by which time he had sold his rotary phase convertor and other stuff. I trust him very genuine chap.
Collect myself as he couldn't palletise for me.
When I first powered it up seemed fine. I heard the hydraulics bubbling away but I realised the spindle and power head feed were reversed so I quickly knocked it off.
Swapped 2 wires around as normal.
Spindle runs incredibly smoothly and the correct way. The power rise and fall head works fine.
But now when you start the hydraulic pump there is a nasty clang type sound and nothing more.
Any ideas anyone?
It is chain driven so maybe that has jumped off? Or maybe one phase is down although my lead/socket works fine on my other machines.
Could he have wired it in a strange way? I thought a rotary phase convertor just gave out normal 3 phase?
Strangely there are 2 isolator switches on the side of the cabinet. Neither seem to do anything - runs with them on or off.

Yes.
The cover over the tank was loose.This allowed it to hit the chain drive on startup only. The reason it was tripping is that as sion as I heard the clang I would release the start button. My reactions must be fast. Hold it in a fraction longer it runs fine

I so have a problem though. Runs very well one way but the table won't power the other way unless I hold down the lever on the bed. The flip valve basically only operates one way instead of both.
Anyone got any ideas?

Can't help myself when an auction comes up localish. It is like an illness. Can't be helped

I am starting to get like @God mode restorations and you with things under tarps on driveways and wherever they would fit. However, you and @God mode restorations have been getting rid of a few things recently.......

We were planning on getting a bigger space, but interest rates stopped that plan DEAD in its tracks.

Other British equipment is pretty popular though. Clausing lathes are rebadged Colchesters and I see Startrite bandsaws are quite popular. This Old Tony has one.

Yes, but they compete on price, not known for very top of the line.
J&S grinders are sought out for their accuracy is my point.

Only got rid of a couple of bits...made a lot more room but it's that scenario when stuff goes more come in.

I started clearing the drive earlier today. This has now been interrupted by a visit to A&E where I've been sitting for the last 3 hours getting very bored.

Looks like a Norton grinder.
Accuracry, weight, what ever.

It's definitely a snow and co grinder.

I don't doubt you on that, it just has the same look as the early Nortons

Jones and Shipman made a machine that worked. It did what it said on the tin, the company I work for has machines dating to the1970s that still produce sub micoron accurate wore on a production scale.
