If I've to join two round bars or tubes end to end then I usually set them in an off cut of angle iron to hold them in line but clamping them is usually the trick.
What's the best type of grips or clamps for this?
I have a piece of angle for this job with a section of flat welded to the back , with this any clamp will do as they have something flat to sit on instead of the corner of the angle.
If the round protrudes out the top of the angle, I use a home made chain type clamp, or I have in the past tacked a bit of flat to the cor er of the angle then used normal locking plier type c clamps

I have same, however the angle is 2 separate pieces in line to have a gap (approx. 1") for welding.
Use a piece of round stock to hold them in alignment to the flat piece (or angle) when building
the jig.
