Joining Titanium and stainless steel

Hello

Is there a way to join titanium with stainless steel?

I would like to join motorcycle titanium exhaust to the existing exhaust pipes (stainless).

So far I am not successful, using 316L rod I manage to weld it decently, but once I apply any force.. the weld breaks...

any ideas?

That's like trying to weld aluminium to steel, I don't think you will ever manage to do it by any normal do it yourself at home welding process.

Nuts/bolts + flanges, slip joints, V band type connectors? Of those the slip joint is the only one that won't need bits making from Ti to make the joint. As said welding Ti to stainless is kinda like trying to weld ally to steel, pretty much the only dissimliar alloys that can be welded directly to Ti without getting a 'glass brittle' mess are horrifically spendy, things like tantalum and zirconium

I'd use a Milakor Clamp

But I wonder if you could use Sif No8 or the other flavour HR?

Dunno. I'm pretty sure it's physically possible, whether the joint would have usable properties is another thing. Haven't read the pdf properly yet (a bit heavy going for a lazy Sat afternoon) but silver solders get mentioned. A lighter read here http://www.keytometals.com/Article136.htm which only talks about silver and ally based brazing/soldering and specifically says zinc and tin are no good. Sif #8 is copper + tin and i'm thinking the temps too high as this jumped out at me

Higher brazing temperature promotes the growth of intermetallic phases, therefore the shear strength of titanium lap joints brazed at 710-720°C was by 10-20% lower than that of the joints brazed at 670-680°C.

What to do... go photograph some bike tubes or have a play (i noticed some common flavours of ally got mentioned)
