we have just cut all the old steelwork out of the roof in the factory and had new put in, but the stuff coming out wasn't much different to that in parts

Not really, there would be a lot of deflection like that. Normally a plate bolted across top and bottom flanges as well as the web splice thats there. Packing plate/s to make the section sizes marry up.
All looks a bit of a lash up/untidy job.
Judging by the lock nuts and witness marks on the fixings its part of a machine/something that vibrates around?

That method must be a weak point as it can't possibly equal the way an RSJ takes load.

It was put into carry tracking for some new hoists, it always worries me how much steelwork they bolt onto the roof supports to keep the floor below clear.

No, it's definitely carrying a load, the leg on the right holds the tracking.

I see that a lot in construction, well, demolition. Often see joists bolted onto plates welded onto the side of columns which is more or less the same. As a matter of fact a lot of the new steel on my current project will be hung off plates welded to the old steelwork.
