It worked, but catching and holding down the machine ones using to save it going flying or walkabout ain't exactly professional, especially not in a demonstration. That's the type of thing you'd bollock even a beginner for doing.
Glued stitched scarf joint is going to be your best bet, but I just used the metal staples with the aligator clip, but I quite like the clack clack noise and its not like the 90 year old shaper its powering in my shed is going to run quiet enough for that to make a difference
Belt material matters too wrt purchase of adhesive, you can get some loctite special adhesive for O rings etc which works great on rubber based belting, but fabric or leather require different stuff.
