Hi guys,
Treated myself to an auto-darkening helmet off eB*y a couple of years ago - it uses the panel described in the thread title.
Took me a few minutes of mistrust to get used to it; when I did I thought I could never go back to the old flip-front one I've had 25 years or more. So much easier to line up the stick or the torch and easy to see while I was welding - I wear varifocal specs and getting the old helmet in position was a nightmare.
I don't do much welding these days, so when I needed to weld a new metal-detecting spade recently I obviously broke out the auto helmet. Took me a second to realise that I was getting dazzled, but not *flashed* because of the UV filter in the helmet.
It was a cold day, maybe a degree or so above freezing, and quite overcast, so I thought maybe there was a battery somewhere in the panel which had gone bad in the few months since it had last been used. I found that occasionally it would trigger and go dark briefly, but I wasn't prepared to trust it not to blind me so I resurrected the old helmet to finish the job.
I Googled for 'replacing battery in Jackson Solex 2130' but came up with nothing, got a few hits on Harbor Freight ones including a YouTube video but they look a lot different from mine. I've just popped the panel out of the helmet for a look-see but it's a very slim unit (maybe 5mm thick) and I can't see any way in.
Anybody had anything to do with them? Don't want to wreck it if it can be fixed; not prepared to shell out on another if they can't be trusted . . .
