Jack??

Got this given to me today. Brass bottom and stamped 1.5 tons. Anyone any ideas what it was used for? Its quite small and only extends about 6 inches

I'd say its a large machinists jack, supporting long bits, holding up large sections etc....

Cable jack is my first guess. It is flat bottomed or indented?

I have absolutely no idea, but my non-specific guess would be, it was used in conjunction with others to level something big?

This looks similar, a railroad car jack. Train carriage (in English)?

The spigot on the top would indicate a specific use in a matching receptacle.

Still a jack though.

Its all steel on top tiggy and your photo of that jack looks very similar

Bit for locating interchangeable heads maybe?
A vee for supporting round stock for instance...maybe

As the jack only extends about 6 inches and is pretty small, i assume its not just used on its own but could be use, say 4 off for self levelling machinery or some sort of heavy fabrication.
