My old morris needs this welded, I'm total newbie to welding, what's the best way to weld this, what metal size to use, Im buying the cross member end piece with out jacking point as don't want it. Here's the photo or it
It's got a few other bits need doing but this bit looks to be the hardest bit

when you have removed all the rust and other previous repairs to get back to good metal the repair will be twice the size of what you have now you will need lots of practice on a bench before going near that after you can weld on the bench
when you start on the car it is like starting to learn again don't be put off that's the way welding on rusty cars is
you need a gas mig 30 amp to 150amp is good Clarks are regarded as good metal normally 0.8 mm
might be a idea to have a look on the moggy forums for similar repairs

Thanks, I've got a clark 100E mk2 and a sureweld monomig 181, what do you think is the best machine to use.

As octo says the repair panels will be a lot bigger than the hole at present , I keep telling people for every inch of rust you can see theres another four or five you cant .

also that cross member from memory hold the end of the torsion bar for the front suspension so that's got to be done right

I would not recommend this type of repair for a novice welder , even if you practise on a bench first its a completely different process when welding a car.
How are going to do the job , will it be on a spit or ramp or will you be doing it with the car on stands or ramps ?
If you are lying on your back its even harder , I am not trying to be negative but you have to ask yourself if you can do the repair safely and to mot standard( I know its an old car )

To do it yourself, you're best to start cutting it out, seeing how it's put together.
Then start replacing from the back!

Looks like it's patched to the left already.

Also search on Morris forums for where people have done that bit before, their pictures will also help you see whats involved.

Very hard to put a price on something like that without seeing in person , you would be better asking on a forum that deals with the cars , hopefully they would be able to answer any question about the type of job needing done .
No one on this forum would put you off learning to weld but you have to do it in stages, look at the tutorials on the forum I am sure they will be a great help.

I'd go with mainly 0.8mm too.

But it's worth checking with a calliper on more structural stuff because you could be up to say 1.5mm and 0.8mm really wont be adequate then. I dare say on a old moggy they have a lot of body work thicker than cars from the last 20 years too.

Parts of the sills either side of the jacking point, floor and crossmember ends will have to be replaced judging from that photo. And that's before the jacking point can be welded on. I should know having repaired a few Minors. It's a couple of days worth of work once all the rust is unearthed. Plus the sill covers will have to come off and go back on on order to protect the repairs from the inside. Around £300 worth of work.

Chickenjohn I bet you couldn't get a garage to do that lot properly for £300. I guess you are talking about finding someone who may be willing to do the job in their spare time?

Rocket man, you are probably right. However, I've been working as a Classic Car restorer on a self employed basis for 2-3 years now and yes I would do that job for about £300. I've done a number of Minor sills so can make up all the proper repair sections and weld it all together and paint and dimitrol in about 2 days.
