Yesterday I took delivery of an R-Tech 170A AC/DC Digital Tig welder.

I have been toying with the idea of getting an AC/DC tig for a while after not having much luck trying to use MIG to weld up some triumph herald bumpers in this thread

I was orginally looking at a draper AC/DC tig, as this is the only job that was needing AC for.
https://www.drapertools.com/product/51499/230V-TIG-HF-Welder-(160A)
and one supplier was selling them with change from £500 (inc Vat a few months ago), and I thought it would probably be better than some of the Chinese imports of ebay, but read somewhere that the pedals for the draper are pretty clunky to use with my welding. (not that it would make much difference with my welding)

but having had cheap Tigmig 170A digital Tig for a while think that a digital panel rather than analog is the way forward

so a couple of weeks ago I started having a quick look at Digital AC/DC TIG's at the lower prices (well its only for one job). and the one thing that drew me to the R-Tech was the clarity of the display panel as the settings are pretty clear on it (or appeared to be in the manuals I could download).
and I still wasn't convinced that I was going to buy a welder yet.
so a short while ago John (Doubleboost) posted that he was after a old car generator, which I sent him as a freebie just because of the enjoyment he gives people with his Youtube channel

and as I wasnt after anything John said he put me in contact with R-Tech and the rest is history......
......Im going to have to stop giving old things away as its costing me a fortune and us from Yorkshire don't like spending money
.....at this rate I'll be banished to live in Lancashire.
so here is my new toy compared to my old one (hope Ive got enough space on my shelf the stick the R-Tech) as the old DC tig is so much smaller and ligher in comparison
and the display panel, one day I'll work of if it makes any difference
I had a look in the manual and it tells you to take the cover off to blow the dust out........so I can take the cover off without invalidating the warranty.....well in that case it would be rude not to have a look inside

from the top
the left hand side
the right hand side
so looking at the inside the wiring is nicely arranged and cable tied in place and there are only a couple places where the dreaded hot glue gun has been used (but Im not technical on these things) and the wiring isnt like looking at a lump of spaghetti. its much neater and tidier than my MigTig welder (or is that TigMig, as I can never remember)
the new torch handle with the R-Tech does feel nicer to hold than my old torch, and the action of the switch is more positive than my old one so hopefully it my be better to use.
as for how the new machine welds, dont ask me, to do a review its best to have someone who knows what they are doing and knows what they are talking about. and so far I've used about 1.5 BOC cylinders of argon a year.
looks like I've having to have a read of Richards guide to welding Aluminium for idiots

http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/aluminium-tig-guide-getting-started.64695/
so there you have it, a new toy to play with and its not even xmas yet.
