I've bent me Baty. (Dial gauge)

I've damaged my Baty dial gauge trying to measure the run-out on my Surf brake discs
I had it stuck to the front hub with a magnetic mount and it fell off
It now won't move smoothly anymore.
I've had this since I started racing bikes 20+ years ago so I'm a bit gutted now
I've taken it apart as far as I can without doing any damage but can't get any further as I can't work out how it comes apart.
Any ideas?

bin it they can be picked up reasonably cheap. i dropped mine and its sticky and binned it after having it 50 years was gutted

Somewhere in DoubleBoost's Xmas box set of DVDs (£9.99 Black Friday special discount), he went to visit his mate who repairs these. There might be some ideas there for you.

Pure speculation from hereon:

Take off the bezel and remove the needle. Undo the two screws in the shaft in the RH picture to allow the rightwards pointing bar to be freed. Undo the other two screws. Maybe that will allow the assembly to rotate anticlockwise so the gear engaged with the rack on the plunger disengages, then the plunger can go up or down.

Get a better mag mount for the next one is my best advice. I expect something is bent.

It is only a 0.01mm resolution, so not too expensive to replace. I would suggest a good analogue one - certainly not a cheap digital offering from china!

The shaft is almost certainly bent, and it probably wouldn't be by much. Very close examination might reveal which way the bend goes, and some gentle persuasion might just free it enough to run smoothly again. I had this once with a micrometer that a cupboard fell onto. It was many years ago, and I can't remember what was used to apply the necessary force. It might just have been pressure from my thumbs, or gentle hammer taps via a piece of wood. It's been OK since.

It's a Mitutoyo and it sticks very well to my vice, I think it just didn't like a rusty dirty cast iron hub.

More (or quite) likely the sleeves are no longer in alignment, is my guess. Need to determine which, before attempting any repair.
