Kent and Sussex hosepipe ban announced from 26 June

South East Water is restricting water usage from 26 June after demand reached "record levels".

And it will get worse, grey/rain water harvesting should almost be compulsory. Never seen the sense in using purified water to water gardens. Perhaps if everyone kept back a thousand litres or so of rainwater there would be less runoff flooding.

I’ve got 2 IBCs off the workshop roof. Use them to irrigate Mrs79’s greenhouse. The pump that runs them is 12v off a battery / solar setup.

I am not particularly eco friendly but this has shown me how much water we let run off into soakaways and whatnot.

Not on a meter but if we were that’s at least 2000l a year if not more saved.

It wasn't many years ago a guy got prosecuted for storing too much rain water at his home.

True Gaz, the trouble is any planning application to build or extend anything as big as a reservoir will get kicked about the table for donkeys years. Bound to be the subject of legal wrangles, consultation and appeals, rainwater harvesting is a simple and quick partial fix.

i can also say the same with the farmers as well they can collect water from streams as well as draining there own fields for collection but they dont collect water for storage in large silos instead that tap into the normal supply and use that

I completely agree with your post James, but to put it into context by the time you've bought a couple of IBC's, had them delivered, bought a battery and solar panels plus ducting, that's going to cost a fair bit (£300 hundred min?)

2000l of water costs around four quid!! I dont think you would ever break even (bit like solar panels)

Water and sewerage should never have been privatised. it’s far too important for public health.

It was just **** I had kicking about but if I was buying it all in you’re not far off.

Probably double if they were new IBCs.

I don’t have a video to illustrate useful **** kicking around my yard. I may post one…..

its not gaztube but common sense to stack on top of each other then you gain a gravity fed system then a pump isnt needed

the weight of the water pushes water enough its same with a dam

so easily used on an alotment or within your garden

but people are bone idle and then sit there complaining that they cant use the water when a hose pipe ban comes into effect

yorkshire water should never run out of water unless its feeding other parts of the country we had the dams built for there industry if they arnt being maintained or being decomissioned then the fault lies with the water company and they should be paying us back

Back in 94 when Thatcher privatised water in England and Wales public feeling was strongly against it in Scotland, so against a backdrop of a rise in Scottish Nationalism they caved in and let us retain ownership of Scottish water. So we have cheaper water bills and 35% more investment per household than English water authorities. Also cleaner beaches.

I've got the hose and sprinkler / wavy thing on in the garden now. The only time I've used it before was for new grass seed but this is the first time I've felt the need just for the ordinary lawn.

We had 1 hour of rain last Sunday and that's been the only in 4 weeks. And yes, this is in Scotland!
