Your first picture reminds me of a building we had on the edge of town, it was solidly made of the famous 'last forever' Whitehaven red bricks, unfortunately it lasted no longer than when Tesco wanted the site for it's supermarket.

It would have probably converted to over 100 flats and most of them would have had a sea view too.

Called it something I can't print here, a wrecking ball and modern rubbish replaced our local history

The arts and crafts era seems to be out of fashion at the moment, but the detail of design and quality of build are wonderful. It's a pity new uses can't be found for more of the industrial architecture.

On the other hand building regs ensure that a change of use is more expensive than knocking the old place down and building a nice new box that will only last 50 years.

There are so many examples of development vandalism everywhere.
I often wonder whether the rush to replace established views (buildings, roads, trees) with shiny new stuff leads to the disrespect that so many towns suffer?

Im sure that you are right, in Southend & all round the area much of the towns fine victorian or Edwardian architecture has been destroyed & replaced by soulless carbuncles, much of this sanctioned by greedy grasping councillors & planners.

There's some great old buildings round Holbeck, my favourite is the Temple Works.

same here in brum, loads and loads of fine old buildings have been bull dozed that could of been saved and used just to pave way for stacked chite and architects dreams,

they simply don't build with ornate architecture anymore, look how ornate some of the chimneys are on old buildings never mind windows, doors and alike

Definitely going back to Holbeck soon

New buildings focus more on Eco credentials than design and being ornate, and the issue with listed buildings and ancient monuments is English Heritage make it such hard work to sympathetically develop people either don't bother or wait until they crumble and can build an eco box on the site

Yes, you and I are in the same part of Essex by the sound of it. I wonder how small the so-called 'conservation area' would have got if the developers had their way in the 70's and 80's?
Southend (AKA Sarfend, Saffend, etc) can't hold a candle to the architecture of some of the industrila towns further north, but there's still stuff that could be kept. Sadly, there's no moeny in it for the grabbers and the Council usually rolls over when some developer comes up with a load of bull about how much cash their 'development' will bring to the town.
My own little town is currently under the planners hammer. 'They' want to sweep away a couple of industrial areas in favour of a large supermarket and more housing.
True, the industrial areas aren't pretty, but they employ people ans they aren't in-your-face.
What will the supermarket do?

• Cripple some existing businesses (and there's already a small Sainsbury and a Co-op)
  
• Increase light traffic
• Increase heavy traffic

More housing will do much the same plus increasing the AM/PM road loading, which is already painfull, plus more load on the utilities, rainwater handing, sewage, etc.

Existing mixed type/age/use shops and buildings will be swept away, too.

Apparently, according to the expert planners, the town 'needs' it.
