tig'd a couple of 10p's and 5p's together, a butt weld and a lap weld. These were actually first atempts, the butt is just a tack on each side, could be broken by hand, but is surprisingly strong. And the lap could probably have gone down in the amps, both were done at around 20-30amps.

I can see a big and potentially expensive project coming on

Your welds are tampering with the structure of the coin, whereas mine are only on the coin. You appear to be melting the body of the coin.

I have a letter from the treasury giving me the all clear, mine can be ground off, leaving coin of the realm usable.

Good grief.

But show us what you are doing, you must be rich to be able to use two shillings like that.

That's the one, just thought there was alot of potential in coins.

As for it being illegal, I'm not too sure, read somewhere that it was a myth started years ago to stop kids putting coins on the railway. And how many times have you been to museums, theme parks, seaside resorts that have those machines that you crank round that flatten and put a stamp on a coin. Are all these places braking the law.

Even if it is illegal can't imagine it will be a great punishment, would a fine make sense

I think the origins of this are when coins were made of valuable metal and actually worth somethng.

I will scan and send you a copy of my letter if you send me your email.
Melting them needs a licence, welding on the surface does not, as it does not destroy it as a piece of currency.

I was hoping to be breaking the law, the publicity would have been great,
'Artiste busted for wasting 80p' would have been a great press story.

I did have somebody start banging on about this a while back at an exhibition, he went away deflated when I brandished my headed letter at him. Pillock.

Interestingly (or not) the groves on the edge of coins are there because as you say when coins were made out of real silver people would shave a small sliver off the edge of the coins and when they had enough melt it down and sell it. Just a random thing I read somewhere.

reading about that guy from the US, he was told by the government that it was his money so he could do what he liked with it so maybe quarters would be better. His nickel bench has $350 worth of quarters, and takes 300hours to build, but then he sells them for around $50,000

I saw a silver groat the other day that someone had found with a metal detector. As you say it was shaped like a 50p piece where all the edges had been trimmed off.
