just been practising with my new welder. i am building a little basic off road buggy with 1 1/2 inch 1.6mm mild steel tube. Below is a pic of some spot welds i have just done. Would this be strong enough if i was to make the buggy with just spot welds like i have done in the pic?
Worth noting (apart from the "no"), those are not spot welds, they're big tacks. So in the same way as if you were sewing, a tack does not equal a full stitch. It's there to hold stuff together while you do the real joining.
My advise would be to practice a little more, if you are unsure about the strength then weld to scrap pieces together and see if you can break them with force.
It needs a seam of weld also not tacks like you've done.
When I was taught the basics we had to weld 2 pieces of 3mm together to make a 'T', then we would test it to destruction, if the steel bent or snapped before the weld failed it was deemed a success.
You could also weld two pieces together and then cut the piece in half across the weld and inspect the weld across the two pieces to see how well they have joined.
