Is this the new norm with car insurance?

Just finished getting car insurance for my 82 year old mother.
My brother and I are both on her policy, I use my email so that I can keep an eye on renewal dates as my mum sometimes (loses) emails.
Just got an email from them requesting a DVLA code for all 3 of us, needs driving license number, NI number, Postcode where licence is held, got the codes from DVLA, sent that off then noticed on another email asking for photos of all three licenses front and rear.
Spent over an hour and a half collating this info from 3 different households.
What an absolute pavlova, elephant insurance, won’t be darkening their doorway again.

Wonder if something has changed in the rules on their liability in the event you’re driving and don’t have a licence.
Say for example if they’re unable to say ‘no licence means you’re not insured’ and walk away any more…

I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes common place. Watching one of those traffic police programs recently and car was insured for an area nowhere near where the person lived and he didn't even have a driven licence. The driver had been pulled for their driving otherwise wouldn't have triggered their ANPR.

The only time I have been subjected to that sort of nonsense was with Bennetts, who I will never at any price, consider again. It was someone else wanting to put me onto his insurance and in the end we told them to stick it. They pulled a few stunts on my insurance too.

Yes this is new to me but I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes the norm, total pain in the ****, but it would stop people lying to their insurance company’s about points on their license not declared or past licence bans, that’s the only advantage.

They’ve just done this with the works vans. If you want to drive them you have to do the licence code thing online and then submit that to management to forward on to the insurance. Before it was a free for all and anyone employed could just go out in any vehicle. No idea who the insurer is though.

This was from a price comparison website online, either Go compare or money supermarket, can’t remember now.

I renewed mine two days ago. Nothing like that, in fact I barely had any contact with the company at all. Checked for the best price a month ago, rang to see if they would match it (they did) and let the auto renew go ahead. No questions from them.

I’ve had to do that dvla number thing before, but only when hiring a car when flying into the UK.

The stupid thing is that if I’d used my Philippines driving license I wouldn’t have had to do it.

ive known that sort and one can be easily forgotten about, due to being 2 emails sent instead of the one

some drivers have had there policy closed due to forgetting one email detail

that number form dvla is supposed to show all details on both sides of your d license ( dont forget to check yourself whats been recorded with both your license and whats recorded via the dvla link page dvla is known for not recording all of your details on the d license )

I cant see the point of the second email unless its a con to close the policy

I've been asked when insuring less common stuff. Not a problem.

I remember the warning about having to generate a code from DVLA to be able to rent a car - never needed it, the only thing I've ever been questioned about when renting in the US is the expiry date - it being rather further in the future than the (annual?) US renewal. Mind you these days, having rented so many, I just get decanted from the shuttle bus, pick the vehicle I want and drive off . . . person at the gate logs me to the car and away I go.

I've had a situation where they have asked for the DVLA code before, but it has been optional to "speed up" processing.
So they didn't get any of the extra information they wanted, and it went ahead just fine - so worth checking if it is mandatory or not.

I've had it with some, not with others. It's mainly used for checking if you're telling porkies about endorsements. But also for any medical notes. I'd imagine with an 82 year old to insure you are more likely to see it as it is part of risk profiling.
