Is this mag drill anygood??

I want to drill holes about 20mm in size in steel plate upto about 18mm thick,and was wondering if you guys think this broacher will meet my requirements?.
Mag drills/broachers certainly seem to have come down in price over the last couple off years?.
Any help on mag drills would be much appreciated.

Any mag drill will breeze through 20mm plate Steve, the cutters are very efficient. Mines an evolution ME5000 which has a bit more capacity than that one but that Slugger can handle 30mm cutters through 50mm plate in a single pass so plenty in reserve!
For the bast prices on cutters try diywelding, he's a forum member who sells cutting and welding equipment. I bought several from him and they're superb and very cheap. He also supplies a pilot pin with each one, others sell them as extras. He has a website.

I have also been looking around for a magnetic drill a few people on the forum have recommended the Rotabroach Puma cheapest I could find was hear https://www.tool-net.co.uk/search/index.php?Keywords=mag+drills&b=Search
but your one looks a higher spec. I also looked at diywelding website but couldn't find a 220v machine and I don't have a 110 transformer

Thanks for that Wozzaaah,Scarecrow,i have ordered the Slugger R32 and will let you know how it performs.

My mate has his own fabrication company and he said they use supermarket veggie oil to lubricate their broaching bits and he said it works fine,anyone tried this method??,or any other lubricants you would recomend for broaching,because if there are other fluids that are cheaper than the proper broaching fliud they might be worth a try?.

Heres a thread with some info on oils.. TBH the volumes you use when broaching holes is tiny a ltr can does alot of holes...

Hi steve ,ive recently bought a rotabroach puma mostly for site work .

www.winzerwurth.co.uk do a good high tac spray cutting oil.
I would recomend using a cutting oil rather than cooking oil as there are additives in the cutting oils, look after your cutters with a decent oil and they will last a lot longer.
Remember to add oil to the top of the holder so it runs down the pin and cools the slug in the centre when cutting as that gets hot, too much heat and you will blunt the cutter.

Anyone know of a mag drill that will take 2 morse taper tooling instead of the standard 19mm spigot? The Evolution ME3500 *looks* as if it should have a 2MT socket in the spindle, it has the space for it, but it doesn't seem to. Something around 1200W / 12Kg, that sort of size if possible.

I'm pretty sure they're all 19mm Ian, not absolutely certain but all the ones I've looked at are standard 19mm 'weldon' type.

I saw the ME7500 which comes with a 3MT, but at 24Kg, it's like lifting a sack of cement!

Looking at the exploded diagram of the ME5000:http://www.evolutionpowertools.co.uk/uk_parts_pdfs/me5000.pdf
it almost looks like I can machine up a replacement cutter arbour with an internal taper and thread it on in place of the original. Might be an option...

i was looking at these on ebay last night, decent looking ones for around 100-300 quid. i was going to have one instead of a pillar drill. oh well. maybe when i get a transformer for 110 and win the lotto

I need to buy a new one - one half of the magnet has stopped working. Used a hired one the other week and realised what the magnet power should be like! Quoted a price for repair more than a new one! There were some Rotabroach mag drills on ebay a while back at a reasonable rate. Gone now

evolution are a decent make. should be ok. not as good as hitachi but should be ok for regular light use. we had one at work on hire. i think it was an evolution on. not 100% though. at that price it may be worth a try

The evolution stuff is made in china , not saying there stuff is bad (erm apart from their stainless chop saw blades ) thats the reason its cheap tho
