Just out of curiosity, do many tradesmen price up jobs in this way- i.e. give a separate labour cost and then materials cost?

I do wrought ironwork, so it wouldn't be practical to give a costing of materials anyway- but I can imagine there would be a few awkward moments if the tradesman charges for x amount of days, but gets done a lot quicker than he thought.

As I say, I just give one price for the whole job and wouldn't itemise the bill.

i give prices for jobs and sometimes seperate materials from labour if the gear is expensive .if i allow 2 days for a job i rarely tell the customer how long it will take . if u get it done quicker the punter says u got it done in a day and a half can i have some money knocked off all i say is if the job took 2 and a half days would u pay me another half days pay on top after i gave u a fixed quote theres your answer

In reply to the OP, a couple of hundred quid a day, give or take, seems about the 'going rate' nowadays for one person.

Assuming hes working as a business and not on the side, then out of that daily wage he has to cover the usuals- fuel, accountant, advertising, insurance, rental of a works unit possibly, buying of new power tools and consumables when they break to name but a few.

Then theres the slow periods, where theres no work coming in. If you have a week off you don't receive a weeks holiday pay etc.

I'm sure it must factor the hidden time you have to incurr to go to the suppliers to get all the bits n bobs required

Tradesman and labourer for £200 a day, that's not that much more than mates rates for cash in hand work once you have added tax and all the other costs in. My mate will work with me for £70 a day cash in hand, that's not a hard or long day and I provide breakfast, lunch and brews and we'll get done 6 or 7 hours.

Yeah I have to agree that is cheap, we charge between 28-35 quid an hour. I know it's not the same trade but as said try getting a skilled bloke for less than £20 is not really going to end well, pay peanuts get monkeys!
