I am sort of toying with getting a plasma (would be a nice toy anyway!!), I have a fairly small compressor at the moment from Axminster, which says it can do 7cfm. Would this be up to driving a plasma... probably wouldn't use it for extended periods etc, so if I had to stop to build pressure again that would be ok. If this compressor would do it then it is more realistic for me buying a plasma (without the additional cost of a new compressor). I would probably want a plasma that could do say 6mm clean and maybe 10 severance.

All plasmas are different. But I wouldn't think that will be big enough, I changed 100L 2.5hp for a 100L 3hp as the 2.5 hp wouldn't keep up. With the 3 hp the compressor is going all the time (and I only have a small plasma cutter), could do with 200L tank. A run of 400mm run isn't long, there must be enough air running after finishing cutting to cool the tip as well.

You also need to check the duty cycle of your compressor.

Mine's about that size, 6,5 as I recall and it's usable for about 25 - 30 seconds at a time. It's a 25 L tank.
I'm usually moving things about, changing position, etc, by that time anyway and I just wait an extra few seconds, maybe 20 seconds max, while the compressor fills again.
It's about ten seconds from a full cylinder before the motor start up too.
It'd not be much use for all day, or where you need to work quickly.
