Is this a reversing lever on this motor?

I'm slowly restoring an old Capstan lathe.

This is the motor than came with it.

Any ideas what this lever is in the side? It has a fairly convincing detent.

I had something similar on an ex forecourt fuel pump motor and it was a simple but decisive on/off switch.

Looks like a Flame Proof out of an old petrol pump Avery Hardoll or Wayne perhaps, long time since I saw any AEI motors

I installed mine onto a Union(?) pillar drill with a rod to pull/push the lever on the motor.

I've got a switch for it and wouldn't be easy to use the built in one as it's hidden in the lathe cabinet.

JMS, think u should be worrying about how hot the motor will get....no ventilation....for extended periods......
those fuel pump motors only ran for a few mins...
even norm motors get a little hotter in a cabinet.....and putting a fan on ur's will be of little use....

Is that what the BS170 bit means? I did wonder....

YES. You perhaps should have looked it up?

I would suggest a three phase motor (from your spares) and invest in a VFD. Single speed lathes are a bit limited in use.

Did you only wonder about that lever? You could not have repositioned it and then connected the motor to the mains supply. Instant result without needing to ‘wonder’?

Maybe you should compare the rating plate to those of your spares? Rating plates are, by their very nature, all to do with the official capabilities of the machine. They are not that difficult to decipher. by the average person.

its a welding forum and good for general knowledge from members . no wonder people dont like asking questions if thats the answer they get
