Is there another wiring option to series & parallel?

I wanted to have a 5w LED light on the side of the house and one on the back. I would have preferred to connect them in series so that there is only one cable run , but then my lamps are not going to be as bright. If I connect them in parallel the lamps do not lose any brightness, but I have to run two separate cables. Are these the only two options.

You could double the supply voltage and wire them in series. OK if they're low voltage, but you may not want to have 500v running round the house though!

Yes, I prefer to stick to 240. But curiously, how would you make it 500? Do I need to refer to ohms law to work it out?

I think I’ve just thought of a workaround. Run the supply cable to an IP rated junction box located very near the first lamp. Run a very short piece of cable (30cm) from the IP junction box to the 1st lamp and run another piece of cable from this junction box to the second lamp. Wired in parallel but with less cable? Lamps retain intended brightness.

Use a transformer.

If these lamps are 240v they may have electronics inside which may not like being wired in series.

I reckon the cost of saving wire will be greater than the cost of wire saved, also it would be confusing and dangerous for anyone working on the lamps who didn't know how it was wired.

No, it wasn`t to save on cost (of wire). It was to save on running two separate wires around the house. 1mm & 1.5mm wire is as cheap as chips and I have half a drum in stock.

Why do you need 2 cables in parallel ? Just run 1 cable and use a junction box at first light or if light allows in and out of first light

Or if the lamp's terminal box is big enough, fit a second gland so you can run the cable "through" the first lamp to the second.

Yep battery.

I have 4 240v -200W halogens all working together off three pir's one at either end and one in the middle over 150 ft span with one 4core cable

All your existing domestic wiring is in parallel i.e the device is wired across the L & N.

None of it is wired L in & L out to the next device & then L in & L out to the next device then L in & N out back to the CU.

Even if it looks like that as the L & N daisy chains around the circuit. There is always a "dropper" from both L & N to the device even if its is internal.

You dont need the junction boc, just do it in the fittings enclosure. Just like lighting is now done in the ceiling rose.

If they are 240V Lamps then they need to be wired as normal 240V lamps. All the gubbins to drive the LED is in the housing and should therefore be treated as normal Light fittings, they just use less power.
