Is shim stock made of gold ?

I was pricing up a bit of shim stock today, thought i might get it in rs components, so went onto their website and nearly choked when i seen the prices ! Is shim stock made of gold or possibly platinum, stupid money.

Not quite big enough for the job, but i did think about it. Bought a pack off fleabay in the end for a tenner, its just a pain having to wait for it to be delivered when i could have done with it tonight.

I have found old biscuit tins to be ideal

I didn't realise the prices were so high,I have a few packs of Lamibloc shims slotted around 6" or 7" square, will have to dig them out,havnt seen them for 20 years but I believe from memory they are stainless,

Shims stock is dear everywhere. Look at cromwells prices!
Again buy from eBay and suffer the wait

use beer cans. special brew is liquid gold on a serious note it makes good shim stock

Radio Spares always was expensive - my dad used to use them back in the 70's - you pay for the convenience and speed of delivery.

Are they still steel, nearly everything is alu these days.
I have heard about this business, because my cousin had a career working for the Metal Box Company, and his (very well paid) job was to work out new ways of making beer and baked bean tins out of ever-thinner metal!
Also to use even thinner layers of laquer on the insides. Crazy world we live in..

I had forgotten about them, quite handy, they are stainless - must have last used them 20 odd years ago, cannot see a price on their website....suspect if normal shim is the price of gold, they will be the price of rhodium.

I needed shim stock for my lathe tools. I was also astonished by the prices. I am sure you could buy a pack of different sizes quite cheap. I invested in some tin snips instead.

I find the precision always deteriorates by the cut edge with snips,no matter how good the snips.

Should be done in a guillotine really

Steel banding makes good shim steel, esp for tooling. Dont like to use aluminium as galvanic reaction will cause it to expand, in sone applications

I have cut Many thousands of shims, Thicked stock can have the cut edges dressed up skas not to alter the thickness, Thin shim stock when cut with decent snips.etc, Always give the edges a rub with the face of a hammer etc while supporting the shim on a nice hard flat surface, Never ever had a problem,

Nor I - however I don't use them for precision work.

hss hacksaw blades are good for lathe tool packing just grind the teeth off and snap them to length

I have two round tins of the stuff, steel & brass, all diffeent thicknesses. Found them in a skip at the college where i used to work!
