Is Sheld gas a must for exhaust tubing?

Hello, every one new to the site My question is do you really need shield gas in welding exhaust tubing? I been told defferant thing on this matter dont really have that much expireance with exhaust tubeing am a young welder looking for some expert advice. I used Argon and co2 mixture for welding thin metal before, dont have the funds right now to buy a mixture.I have some "NO gas" flux core wire. 30. was gona use that to weld my new muffler to exhaust. My fear is that because I am not useing shield gas/with Shield gas wire my weld may not pinatrate well leaveing leaks. I was told that shield gas is a must for welding exhaust tubeing because of patrartion reasons. Dont know if that ture, I always like to use it beause of the control i have with it as well as the contamation factor. any help would be appnracited thanks in advance

This was posted in the TIG section but it sounds like you are talking about MIG.

You can use flux core wire without gas. You will need to swap the polarity (torch negative.) It will have higher penetration than the same size gas wire.

Many muffler shops use gasless (flux) wire. Look at the Lincoln NR211 available at places like HomerD. SIF or Hobart would be good too. Stay away from no-name wire or store brand; most is crap.

Soory about the post, still learning the site. yes it is a mig hopefully i can figuire out how to move it to were it belongs. But since you answer do you mean to witch the postive and negitve cables inside the welder? Ive never done this will this damage the welder in any way? I have a lincon 120 gas welder, I also have a MIG 115 no gas wire welder. thanks

Lincoln will have the manual on their site. It will say the jumper settings for each polarity.

The no-gas MIG will already be the right polarity.
