Hi,
I just got myself an autodarkening helmet as I'll soon start learning mig welding. I bought the Ipotools LY800h helmet (pretty standard chinese helmet but it has good reviews). I made a few tests with it to see if it works properly before actually starting to weld (did not yet own a welder so I cannot test with an arc)...but I'm not sure everything is right with it:
Sun test: when looking at the sun, the filter gets dark immediately but it does not remain dark! Is that normal? I tried to set the sensitivity to max but it still doesn't stay dark when looking at the sun.
TV remote test: when firing a tv remote control at the helmet, the filter gets dark and stays dark until I release the button, which seems fine. However if a light source is behind me (e.g. a window), pointing the remote at the helmet does not always turn the filter dark, or completely dark. Again, playing with the sensitivity button does not help.
Does this indicate the helmet is not working properly? I would especially expect the helmet to remain dark as long as I look at the sun... The helmet has a low battery indicator light but it is not lit. I also let the helmet charge in the sun for a few hours but I still get the same behaviour. Again, with the tv remote, the helmet remains dark, butnot with the sun. So is this one a bad unit?
thanks!
