is it worth fixing a oven?

Ok so the part below has broken the plastic that selects the mode has been melted off

I presume due to it arcing across the terminals

anyway is it worth paying £30 for a new part when i can get a new oven for £120

last time i fixed a oven for a friend i changed the element in the top a month later the bottom element went! Just thinking if I change the selector something else could go like a element then it would have been cheaper to get a new oven!

If it's a fitted oven and you already have it apart then probably.

If it's a free standing unit and it's getting old then that could just be the first sign of problems...

I had smeg freestanding range unit, very.nice, had a pizza stone and a chicken spit in it. Got to about 10 years+ and needed about £300 of spares (at genuine prices, could have got cheaper aftermarket)
I thought about it as it was a £1500+ cooker but ended up getting a whole new one from a kitchen showroom clearance for £200 so a no-brainer really.

Plus when I took mine apart there was a plentyfull amount of filth in the guts of it.
Would have been a pretty major restoration project!

If you just need functional rather than pretty there are always loads of cosmetic damaged new cookers for sale at a fraction of the retail price anyway...

it is a currys essential oven not in my house a friends house it is only 5 years old but they are only £110 quid new
she cant be without a oven for too long as she has a year old

Yea, at that price it's only £22 a year for a new one.

My concern would be either one of the elements is starting to increase resistance and is causing the switch to arc hence the burn out or it's got to the number of heat cycles where the plastic on the switch has gone brittle. Any other parts in there are going to be about the same condition.

They are built to a price so rather than speccing the best of everything they are choosing components that all meet a minimum requirement. I suspect all the parts inside it may last roughly the same amount of time.

It will need to last another 18months+ for her to be better off by replacing the switch.

hum there were some spare ways i think not sure they had the same cam on it though it is the main on that went so no functions worked

Just bridge the main power wires together.
Then the selector can still be used.

Put a 32a switched ceeform socket on the wall for them to turn it off.

Will also come in handy if you need to do any welding in the kitchen for them!

In seriousness, might be worth bridging them out for testing just In case it's something downstream causing the switch to melt.

Yea. My missus is funny about stuff like that.

Unless we have a power cut then she will go out to the van, fire up the gennie and drag 16mm cables all over the house so she can watch eastenders and have her electric blanket on!!

To extended the life of the new switch it helps if you select the function then adjust the temperature via the thermostat.
That normally removes the load from the selector switch.

well the oven is fixed new selector did the trick, Another Question though the light to tell you it is on flickers constantly not full on/off but a flicker nevertheless is this normal I cant say I have noticed it before with it not being my oven

It could well be neon. They flicker all the time. Look at the indicators on MK switched spurs.

yes it is a neon but the temp neon dont flicker in sync or as much probably on its way out too
