Filler rod for tig is double or triple deoxidised, using OA rods will cause porosity,and poor weld pool control.
Double de oxidised wire contains small amounts of Manganese and Silicon, triple de oxidised also has the addittion of Aluminium. Mig wires are also available double and triple deoxidised.

NO to the O/A Rod !!!!!
When I purchased my Dynasty 200DX, I told the counter salesperson that I needed some mild steel filler rod in 1/16 & 3/32 inch size. He sold me "the right stuff", according to him. I knew nothing about the different rods.
Well, to shorten the story, I went through an entire bottle of Argon and all of the 1/16 & most of the 3/32 rods and a big pile of coupons with virtually all of the welds full of pin holes, & craters. i KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG, BUT NOT WHAT! (I have no mentor to help me) When I went back for more Argon & filler, a friend happened to be in the store & I related the problem to him. He asked me what rod I was using, so I showed him the supply the salesperson had sold me. He uttered some very unpure words - describing the salespersons heritage etc. & planted my feet on the proper path with the correct filler rods. UNBELIEVABLE DIFFERENCE. No change except for the filler rod. The welds are now respectable (for a beginner) and I am enjoying the new toy greatly.
DO NOT USE O/A FILLER WITH TIG!!!

TIG Paul - Does the de-oxidisation process add these elements (Manganese, Silicon & Aluminium) in order to remove the oxygen or are they added separately to increase weld ability?

) Speaking of cool; does welding in sub-zero temperatures present any added; precautions or difficulties (if indeed you are working in sub-zero temps)?

Reason I asked about the subject, is because; I used some 35 year old O/A M/S filler, with the TIG, v.recently and the weld seemed absolutely fine. I guess they don't make things like they used to.

Cool Welding
It's +9F outside this morning here in Anchorage, Alaska.
I really don't know about welding in that cold temps. I keep my garage/shop around +50F till I go out there to work. When I MIG, I must open the door due to the smoke. With the TIG, I haven't been involved in a winter yet - too new at it.
I know that when they built the trans-Alaska pipeline, that they didn't stop for winter. It routinely goes down to -50F in the interior of Alaska.
