Is it possible to buy/obtain a small amount red Perspex.

LED torches are as cheap as chips now. (not so when they are designed to fit cycles). I want to make one or two red lenses for rear facing LED cycle lamps (torches).

just go to any signs and plastic shops they will have small pieces in the bin

I've got the same one, it came free with the bike when I bought it secondhand, it's so small that I thought it was a rear reflector until I noticed the on / off switch when I was looking for a suitable mounting place to fit one

One thing that springs to mind is that a torch has a fairly narrow beam and a purpose built rear cycle light has a wide dispersion so the light can be seen from a larger angle behind. I know they're not cheap but I cycle most days/nights right across London and have a 1W Cherry Bomb light attached to my helmet which probably gets me seen from space, it just takes one person to SMIDSY (sorry mate I didn't see you), poor wiggo

Or a hacked bicycle rear reflector ? This would also disperse the light more effectively.

Maybe i've missed the point but as well as the wide angle thing already mentioned bike specific lights are also water resistant (rubber seal etc) and while home made lights wouldn't come close to exonerating an idiot in a car punting you off having lights that meet BS6102 might make a difference to lawyers? Given the £1.02 source posted and this one for a fiver delivered to your door complete with batteries i don't get it

iv been known to be tight but this is above me

for a front light iv got an old fog lamp and a motorcycle battery i can rip through the woods at night safely seeing all the trees im about to hit

I also use a helmet light so i can see where im looking and always carry two cheapy LED ones incase I get a flat battery

Legislation still controls the use of cycle lighting ... go for that and then at least someone might benefit if you get trashed on your push bike .

Home made stuff is simply a sure way of, " No case to answer M'lud , they didn't have proper legally complying lighting. How could my client possibly have know it was a cyclist with home made lights that did not illuminate enough as required by law ? ".

Think of the Darwinnian principle .. those who adapt best usually survive ... get a car ????
