are bolts and set screws extortionate to buy? unfortunately my usual source (work....) doesnt use imperial stuff,and building a hotrod i find myself needing 4 x 1/2" x 3" long unf bolts. i checked all my cupboards but only have 1/4,5/16,3/8 and 7/16. quick scout about on fleabay- £1 + delivery per bolt!!!!

even thought about a box of 50- bank loan!!!!

so where does everyone purchase there fixings?

last time i bought stuff was 10+ yrs ago but didnt think prices had shot up that much.

I use lots of UNF & UNC fasteners in my workshop; as you've seen they're expensive here in the UK. They are much cheaper -especially the high quality Grade 8 sets/bolts- in the US which has never really gone metric. Shipping cost might bring the price back up to UK levels though.

I go over to the US a couple of times a year and as scheduled airlines don't have a weight limit on hand baggage, mine always has a lot of fasteners in it on the return journey. Obviously need to allow some extra time at check in for the inevitable baggage search/discussion with the Homeland Security guys when they X ray the bag and find 6 or 7 kilos of bolts, capscrews etc. in there.

I know.
Mates Mondeo needed a lower wishbone or the MOT. One of the 3 bushes had failed
Parts dam cheep, £18, each. Or £28 for a pair, from a good local supplier.
Or £36 plus VAT, each from ford.

But Ford offered a £8 "Bonus" if we returned the old bits.

Job done, as some will know one bolt drops down from the top, to remove is a gearbox up and out.
Or do what everyone else does, cut the head of and refit a normal bolt with a nylock.

My nosy side came out.
Normal bolt, £2 for 4, with nuts.

Ford, £12 plus vat, for 1.

just called my local fixings supplier asking for unf bolts,he just laughed and said he cant remember the last time he was asked for imperial stuff and would metric be better!!! however hes gone off to check old stock and will call back with any wee cash deals off the books-heres hoping
