Is anyone making aluminium tanks??

Just wondering is anyone making aluminium fuel tanks? If so how are you doing it templates, formers ?? Or any ally tanks ie for motorsport or w h y??

I intend to buy an ac/dc tig welder and am curious to see how these things are done what tig sets used etc. Has anyone done a blog or have it on a site ??

Couple of tanks and some other ally work in my photo albums Both of those were developed using cardboard, wire, and paper taking design clues from the OE tank and the owner. Made the dies to press the sender reliefs, mostly freehanded using mostly homemade tools to suppliment regular panel kit/tinmans mallets. A few details were roughed out with crude hammerforms- quicker than either freehanding all the way or making an accurate/well finished hammerform.
The only 'proper' expensive/big tools used on either of them were a guillotine (not necessary but rude not to when an 8ft one's available) to cut up the full sheet and a bead roller/jenny swage for the stiffening ribs. Oh, and a lathe for making the press dies and the hydraulic press to use 'em in

Note that when putting compound shape into things you typically start out with an oversize blank- margin for error, so you don't wheel your thumbs if using an english wheel etc etc.

there's at least one compound curved motorbike tank in the albums section (Paul33 ?) and more than a few threads on the subject scattered around the forum
