Is 9 CFM enough for respray?

Basically everything is more less in the title.
I am looking for a second hand compressor and I found a 100L which does 9 CFM and 2HP.
And I am wondering if it will be enough to hobby respray.

I have to say that I don't understand everything in the compressor world.

you will have to match the gun to the compressor its no good getting a gun that requires a large cfm and a comp that cant supply also what paint do you intend to use.
if 2k then you should realy have an air fed mask in which case it would be to small

I will be using cellulose, I won't have a air feed mask so I won't risk my lumps.
For the gun, I don't have it yet I am just getting geared up so I can practice on a couple of wing.

If 9 CFM is really to small, I won't go for it. As the compressor purchase is a good bit of money I don't want to waste on something useless which I will lose my time with.

The guy which is selling it as also a second one on sale for 100L so I would say it is probably 9 CFM too or 7.5.

Do you think it will be possible to couple them together to get a better CFM?

yes you can couple no problems have a look at what guns are available i think ideally the minimun is 3hp 14cfm but the 2 coupled will give more then that

Depends on the gun. My cheap HVLP takes 7CFM. Seems a bit less as my compressor does not run a lot.

Check what the gun takes and also make sure the compressor rating is FAD not displacement (FAD will be less.)

Could you explain to me the displacemnent and FAD story, I don't understand ?

And get a small tip like 1.4 as I am beginner.

Or the sealey gold with a small tip too.

The gun is 10 CFM or the Sealey is 7CFM.

So I think if I want to have more choice on the gun I should get 13,7 CFM.
I will be able to run other thing on it to like sand blast, maybe one day.

What do you think?

FAD - Free Air Delivery.
Displacement - volume the piston in the compressor moves per minute.

Here, displacement is not specified.Looks over there displacement is usually all I see listen untill you look at the detailed specs.

FAD will be specified for a specific delivery pressure. Here there will be xx@40PSI nad yy@90PSI. Where xx/yy are the CFM the compressor can deliver at the delivery pressure.

I think mine is 13.5CFM displacement (does not say.) It is spec'ed at 11.9CFM@40PSI and 9.9CFM@90PSI.

The higher the pressure, ther more losses in the compressor. As you can see by the specs i posted, it drops at higher pressure.

Most air tools are rated at 90PSI, so that number is important. Spraying is usually 40PSI or so, so the rates quoted at those pressures are more applicable.

Higher pressure means more delivery down long or restrictive lines. My second drop is on a 25' hose, then a reg and then a 50' hose reel. I can not get lots of CFM from it but it is enough for my uses as that one is used mostly for filling tires.

I have a tap real close to the manifold for air tools that has its own regulator/filter and an oil fogger.

My spray guns have regulators right on them so I always get consistent pressure. The line will vary from 60 to 90 PSI but the gun always gets 40PSI.

I ran one of those for many years so it is possible to spray that way, just a bit restrictive. The tank drains quickly and you have to stop spraying to let it refill so you will tend to be doing a panel at a time.

I'd try for a 14cfm too. There's less polishing and sanding out of the edges of panels. For cellulose the polishing/sanding is possible but it's a pain.

Be sure to set up a good water filter too - they don't come with compressors and with the fast evaporation of celly you really need good water filtering.

I started with a 7CFM FAD (6.9CFM@90PSI), wanted more as it ran continuously when running air tools especially my die grinder.

I found a 9.9CFM@90PSI off Craigs list. Huge improvement. Then found a 60 gallon tank and now it is real nice.

Still want more as my blast cabinet really sucks

Note: my current one is belt-driven with an oil compressor. It is probably 20 years old and still runs like new. I recently emptied the tank and timed how long it took to fill. Calculated it was over 13CFM to fill, probably near new specs as I think it is 14CFM displacement (nit specified.)

Air receivers.

In the 60s spraying cars for pocket money, my compressor was tiny, and I mean tiny,probaly 3 maybe 4 Cu Ft, I started by having two spare tyres connected together with an extra valve in each, they were on the low pressure side of the regulator, I progressed when I got hold of a Calor I think they were about 80LB big size cylinder.it was ported and put up in the roof of the garage as an extra receiver. It lasted me years and sprayed dozens of cars, with Celly and fleet Enamel.!!and I was never short on air, It only went the Journey when a filling station privatly owned was sold to a National chain and I bought the Garage compressor an Ingersol Rand.

But of course depends what you want, what finish, what quality, it all comes in at a price, guns, traps, paint, thinners. The best is not cheap. It all doesnt end when you get a half descent compressor- it will be one answer in a big chain-thats all.I still use the JGA gun occasionally its a 60s gun, just been looked after.But at the time was an arm and a leg to buy.Buy wisley and it will be money well spent, Domestic household 240 volts is gonna be about a 3HP compressor motor, on a dedicated supply, NOT a 13 amp plug.

Having a lack of space, I have a 2HP 50l direct drive compressor ~7.5 CFM. I use a Machine Mart spray gun with 1.4mm nozzle. With 45psi to the gun, the tank never drops below 60psi, but the compressor runs non stop. According to the manual this is O.K. as the compressor is rated for it. It's a bit limited with the windy gun, and an air DA or sander is out of the question so I bought electric ones!

Direct drive compressors are very noisy, but they are more efficient for smaller sized compressors.

The one I am looking at is twin head perruffo 100L so it is not a be belt driven.

I have to say that I am tempted, but I am not sure.

I know that it will be better if I was finding a bigger one but it will be more expensive.

So I don't know, what do you think?

I left this one out.

I found another one, a Cobra 3HP 150L which is in my budget.

I never heard of this Brand, do you know it?

I am wondering about it because of the good old maintenance if require.

About the cobra 3HP, I had a chat the owner but there is no mention of the CFM on it.

However there is a mention of PSI which is 115psi so I think the compressor is about 9 CFM.

Do you think I am about right?

When I sprayed my bug (primer, high build, base & 2k clear) all I had was a 2hp 25l comp and a Kestrel gun (can't remember the model, sorry).
There's a few on here (ChickenJohn and Paul_f) who can vouch for what that set up achieved.

Yes it's do-able, although that poor compressor was on most of the time (now got a 3hp 50l)

Forget windy tools with one that small, except for tyre inflators and blow guns
