Is 1K paint = celloluse ?

Hi guys,
I m basically wondering if 1k paint is cellulose or not if not what is it ?
I have being to a paint shop supplier today and your man was really not helpfull !!!
Apparently they don t know what etech primer is !!! Although there is plenty of cans on their web site.
So I have decided to order online what I need, but I wish I would have find a nice local supplier !!!
so I m going to know more about paint.

1k is single pack like cellulose and so on
2k is 2 pak ie 1 part paint second activator

and if they dont know what self etch primer is they are in the wrong game

Hi Superfly,
Trade shops not being helpfull is very common in my experiance, once they know you are not 'trade', seem to enjoy trying to make you look stupid. Complain, ask to see the manager, works for me.
Or i am just a grumpy old man!!!

Yeah I have notice that more then once, and the fact that I m leaving don t help me neither.
Basically I m looking for a tech primer which will be cellulose compatible as I ll paint with cellulose. So is 1k tech primer is the right thing ?

We must be very lucky here in Thanet because our local auto paint supplier is fantastic! very knowledgable, could not be more helpful with advice and always friendly. It also helps interaction with the mostly male clientele that they usually have a certain nice young lady behind the counter! Who also knows her stuff and is very experienced in paint matters. For example, she took one look at my Porsche 944 parked outside and correctly said "the rear has been re=sprayed and is in the slightly darker shade of Guards red".

They not only know what etch primer is but stock several types, also they only stock good quality products. And there seems to be no pro/amateur distiction, being such a friendly shop they get a mix of both types of customer.

Look around, friendly helpful paint suppliers do exist!

I have no connection with this paint supplier other than being a very happy customer, but due to advertising rules, PM me if you want to know the name of the best paint supplier in East Kent.

Yes, it is. The Upol acid 8 etch primer is a great product and can tell you that it is fully compatible with celly as I've used it for years with no problems.

1K often refers to Synthetic paint. It's a slow drying paint similar to 2K (which is also synthetic) but without the dangerous isocyanate hardener. The number of colours available in 1K synthetic are limited these days, and it's not compatible with cellulose - I think you can spray it over most cured paints but you can never spray cellulose on top of it.

People might have different words for all these paints. For painting bare metal with cellulose it's safe to start with self etch, then a cellulose high build primer that you can sand down, then the cellulose colour coat. I'd not assume anything sold as 1K primer will be cellulose compatible. Ask first.

2k = "zwei komponent" i.e. 2-pack paint.
1k = one part
Thinners isn't counted as a "part" (so 2-pack has 3 elements inc thinners)

1k usually taken to mean acrylic aka basecoat aka 'base'. So normally a 1k primer would be taken to mean acrylic, which doesn't like being built thickly (crazes etc).
It's worth checking exactly what a Thing is however, not just going by what someone calls it. I've even seen celly called "two pack" on the grounds that it has paint+thinner...

Synth enamel aka truck paint, knacker laquer. Haven't found a problem getting colours mixed, but it is pretty horrible stuff. It's saving grace is that it's dirt cheap and DIY friendlly. Can be got in brush or sprayable form.

You can paint over it if it's old and well-cured. This is a matter of weeks/months, not hours... My Landy has 2k over old synth in places.
Especially original Land Rover synth - not even neat acetone disturbed that. It'll still be there after the red button's pushed.

Sorry for off topic but why is synthetic enamel so horrible stuff?
I get that it dries for a long time and you cant spray anything over it before it´s fully cured but is that all? Are those things that make it horrible?
I remember that i spilled some acetone on synth enamel (with hardener) that had been sprayed a few months back and it bubbled up...on the other hand i poured some acetone on 2K paint that was about a month old and it also bubbled up, not as much as the synth but still. However a door that had been painted with synth enamel (without hardener) over a year ago could resist even rubbing it with acetone and nothing would happen.

What I considered horrible with it was that the over-spray was sticky for quite some time on everything it landed on.

It doesn't adhere brilliantly, and seems to UV-fade for fun though that's probably down to cheapness/cheap pigments, and maybe decent paint can be had - over here it's mostly for trucks and Land Rovers and such. Synth clear is pretty yellow. It looks 'right' on old Landies though, have used it on mine. It is very DIY-able too.

I think I'm right in saying that synth can't be "worked" once it is dry either. How it lands from the gun is how it stays.

correct its a one shot paint and doesnt lend to being polished at all and with its long curing time it allows the paint to flow and get a good finish well reasonable for what it is.
i havnt used it for years and i wouldnt recomend it if you have facilities for 2k
but if you dont want a top quality finish that you can play around with then its easier then celly because there is no polishing involved

I have to say that sometime I feel very lonely with my problem

I have decided for my supplier issue, I will get some my stuff on internet and some with another local supplier.
I am still not over what happen in this shop... But sure I will be over it one day.

I guarantee there are at least 20 other people who have any given problem and, like me, think it might be daft to ask. But the only daft question is the one that isn't asked. After all, we all had to learn once and most of us (definitely me!) are still learning. Its a never ending process.

ici permobel was a great syn paint.dont know if its still available,as ici is under a new name now.as for over spray,use masking mask more.

1k = 1 (ein) komponent, 2k = 2 (zwei) komponent. A lot of paint is supplied under different names but made by the same companies, I think ICI now comes under the PPG and Maxmeyer banner as well as their own brand.
