Iron wire?

My daughter (minni egg) is planning a "project"
which involves a largish (50-100m) quantity of soft iron wire - somewhere in the 2mm-4mm diameter range.

I've done a google, but can't find a supplier.
too many arty sites selling a few feet for £££, and "steel wire" just turns up umpteen hits for steel cable.

does anyone have a supplier where I could source a reel?
preferably yorkshire area, so I can potentially save on transport costs?

FH brundles seems a likely candidate.

Not sure what you mean by a 'project' but if it's sculptural then you could do worse than try Alec Tiranti Ltd - they sell sculptural supplies including various kinds of wire for armatures - see here.

"project" usually means some sort of household bric-a-brac/sculpture - light fittings, wine racks, utensils hangers - but she won't elaborate

Try searching for round bar instead of wire. You should find plenty of 3-4mm round bar in 6 metre lengths at any steel supplier.

Buy some sub arc wire or TIG wire. Its hard drawn so it needs annealing. Burn it in a fire. That will soften it but it will be a bit black

Does it have to be iron? You can buy Aluminium bonsai wire from ebay in various diameters quite cheaply, from memory they go up to 4.5mm.

That stuff is high tensile and virtually unworkable

rebar and baling wire is too thin.
not sure about tig or sub arc, but will investigate.
She's tried fencing wire - was OK, but to anneal/remove galv we burnt it, but then it had to be cleaned

Steel fixing wire or tying wire it's normally called. Fantastic stuff for all sorts of uses, my missus used some for hanging crimbo decorations this year. If you want to straighten it out just pull a length around your washing line pole and see-saw it back and forth gently. Don't do it too much or too hard or it will thin out and work harden. Easiest place to get it is on any building site where they are concreting. You'll probably get a few turns just by asking nicely, loads of it ends up in the skip.

I'm after stuff *at least* 2mm thick - and preferably 3-4mm

So 1/8" to 3/16" in diameter.
steel fixing wire *might* be suitable.
a quick google shows it's available (in Oz, at least) in 1/8" (3.15mm) diameter.
