could be big end bearing at fault or even crank bearing giving up

Hadn't thought of that to be honest, although there was an issue with the smaller of the pistons rings, by which I mean they quite literally fell out when dismantling.
The larger of the pistons bore looks a little scored too, but that could be me being picky.
I'd certainly like to have a word with whoever rebuilt the pump last though, it looks like they've used the old gaskets and silicone sealant everywhere!! It certainly isn't or wasn't liquid gasket.

oh yes rings arn't meant to fall off, all you need now is to find what makes it stiff to turn, chances are it was taken apart fro the very same reason but they couldn't find the problem

Having just this moment spoken to John & co who bought the complete back catalogue for the Type-30's after John left IR, I can report on a number of things.
The first, is that he can supply me with a few parts.
The second, unfortunate piece of news, is that he is in the same position as I am regarding the crank and bearings. They leave the factory as 1 piece, and although he has removed the steel sleeve from larger units, he has yet to have any success with a 242 pump.
There are however a pair of knackered cranks waiting for me to experiment with at his unit, along with a few other bits.
I now need to source a cylinder of oxygen, and a regulator so that experimentation can begin.

Are the crank bearings anti-friction bearings or sleeve types?
Do you have any pics or drawings?
Big ends on cranks, can be split from the counterweights, and refitted, and re-aligned, with a little care, depending on the design.
Not on this compressor, but, a crank is a crank, a bearing is a bearing really.

Unfortunately with the weight and import taxes taken into account, it would work out as easy and cheaper to buy a new pump from the UK. The parts are also available from India, but again the weight and import taxes take great precedence.
There's a steel ring that's been heat shrunk to the end of the crankshaft that neither I, nor John can figure out the need for. If it can be removed with heat or by slitting disc without damaging the shaft, then the bearings can be replaced quite easily.
John recalls firing a crankshaft across his unit after applying around 15t of pressure in a bid to remove one of these steel rings.
Hopefully I can figure out the easiest way of attaching a picture through TapaTalk.

As you can see, the bearing has collapsed, and destroyed itself quite well. I was greeted with a handful of bearings and steel shards after getting into the pump.
The steel ring is on the far left, I've had about 12t on it so far, about the maximum I can safely apply before needing to fabricate some substantial supports for my bearing press.
Final straw will be a slitting disc down the side of it and folding the edges out so it can be removed. Bearings are easily available from Brammer.

OK, first, I would never use Brammer for bearings, TOO expensive!
They are about 4x the price of my local bearing supplier, that I use regularly.
As far as removing that ring goes it's easy if you know how!
Grind if down hard at one point without hitting the shaft at all, in one hit, then do the same again @ 180 deg. then press off.
You need to get the wall thickness down to <2mm though, then it should pull off easily, maybe with a small amount of heat to allow the thin wall sections to stretch.
Done it before easily, on MUCH bigger retaining rings than that.

Removing that ring should not be hard.
Heat would probably work very well when combined with a press (ideally oxy acet in order to concentrate it onto the collar, not the shaft).
Cutting through it in two places as suggested above would probably work too.
If it still doesn't go select a big and not very sharp chisel and a hammer to suit and stick this in the cuts you've made and give it a sharp whack. Repeat this until it cracks, but don't go mad and end up hitting the shaft with the chisel. Once it cracks it'll come off.
