Sort of a fusion of 3d printing and metalwork. I posted this recently:
Which is the base layer for a 12.9 inch (monster) iPad Pro. It needs a tray because the idea is for it to be strong enough to lift by the edges one handed. A 3d printed base would either be too flimsy or way too thick. Also, it's too big for my printer to do in one piece.
I also updated the little iPad 10.5 stand which I have been using for years with something I made years ago.
...and that one does (just) fit on the bed of the Bambu labs Carbon X1. It still sits in a tray though because, well because I have a tray made already. It's just about strong enough but ideally I'd make it 3-5mm thicker on the base and that's a lot of plastic.
The tray is coming out of this:
Big sheet of truck siding. Sort of hardened but softish aluminium. As if it has a crispy shell. I'm guessing its work hardened or oxidised and I won't be polishing it up, I like the "recycled" look of the patina.
Several days later (!)
It's amazing how tricky I found it to mark out a "perfect" square on a rough sheet. Can't blame the tools, I pretty much have everything but I did have to use aviation snips (the chop saw hacked it to pieces).
You only get one go at a bend with this material. Bend it back and it will tear off like wet tissue paper. Hit my marks though.
...and I have to be happy with this:
