IP camera

Ok guys tbis one might even test you lot.

I need to get a cheap ip camera working remotely.

Just to be able to see around my van while i am not there.

I have a mobile wifi box (i think its osprey) on EE but will need to unlock it as ee does not have signal at my venue.

Can i connect an ip phone to the network.

The camera works a treat on my broadband router. But not sure if it will connect to this modem.

I do plan on setting up a PC but wont get it done in time for this trip as i need to set it up to auto start in the bios when the timer trips out once per day....i dont trust windows not to lock up over 5 months. Lol

If you want something to run for months unattended I'd be looking at Linux, but can't you just use a wifi camera and the osprey box without the need for a computer ?

I don't really know, I've not played that much with IP cams but if this is to go with the solar setup from your other thread then I'd be looking to minimise the power draw as much as possible, so avoiding a computer would be a good start unless you're gonna run something like a raspberryPi.

Yeah thats my plan . Hooking the ip camera up to the wifi modem but i dont know if its possible.....as its not like an always on broadband connection like i have at home.

Are you wanting to go onto the interwebs and access a website that shoes the live feed of your van?

There may be some chinesium ip cameras out there that will do this, but you'll need to know the ip address thet the 4G modem is using and they tend to use infrastructure natting, which is going to be a ball ache.

what you really need is a service that will recieve the images and store them, so they can be accesses later. Something to collect the images from the camera and forward them the the online store and a site that will access the store and allow them to view them.

You'll probably get this with a high end camera or you could cobble togeter some scripts with a raspberry pi and some online tools

Nope...i was after live streaming to see everything was ok and leave it on alarm function. I have this camera. 360eye.

I have a raspberry dont i @Robotstar5 lol

Never been out of its box but no way could i do anything with scripts.....far to old for that.

Its a bit confusing as i set it all up and it worked a treat.

I could not work out how to find the ip address of the camera.

I went to the local cafe and out of curiosity more than anything else tried the app.....boom up came a live feed of my living room.

So its almost perfect. But for the fact i cant fathom out how to use the 4gee wifi modem to connect on demand when i take the camera off my always on broadband wifi......lol

you can connect your phone to a pc and have the pc see the ip camera or a multi camers set up

for multi cameras its best to reduce your frame rate and you will have to reduce your frame rate for even a single camera

Ok update on my efforts.

I got things almost working how i want now.


THEN i hit a couple more snags.

First i need to keep power to my mifi osprey modem as when the batteries go flat you have to physically press a button to restart it. So i need to have it supplied by a constant 12 volt to usb cable supply. I can do that no poblem.

I also need a switched 12 volt to an inverter. I can also do that timed so the inverter does not drain the batteries even when not turned on.

My main problem is not being able to get the dell optiplex to boot when 240 volts is applied.........without using the switch.

I know my tower pc can be setup to boot immediately the supply turns on......BUT i cant remember how i managed to do it. Lol

Anyone know how to get the dell to boot without a switch when on being turned on at the mains.

You could probably replace the pc switch with time delayed or pulse relay. How are you planning on shutting down the pc?

Just turning of power....i know its not the best way but this micro project for peace of mind has taken a fair bit of cash and not to mention loads of time.

I am keeping power on via micro usb lead to the osprey modem direct from 12 volt battery.

I am using a 12 volt timer to switch the 12 volt supply to inverter. I only really need to check once a day......

The PC was also going to be switched via timer.......but i am not sure i need this as it wont be live until the 12 volt to the inverter switches on....so i wont need to sycronise two timers.

Awesome.......i CAN power down the PC and get it to restart AND boot upon application of 240 volts.

Tbe spanner in the works was a 10 second delay......if i "shutdown". Via windows Remove 240 volts and reconnect within 10 seconds it wont reboot.

After 10 seconds it works like a dream.
