Hello,what are the advantages of the inverter welders?....as a opposed to a normal mig?...thanks.

lighter units and you can get a few more top end amps for less input current, downside they go wrong more often then a transformer mig and more expensive to repair

yes exactly the same but invertors can have different features due to the circuitry

I have the dreaded SIP 170 crap wire feed and poor control...thinking of buying a better quality welder...like the look of SWP or Portamig..anyhow must get to bed! lol.Thanks.

Inverters have:

Continuous adjustment of the power rather than steps.

Power for power lighter.

A very smooth arc coz it's pure DC. Better transformer MIGs about £500 and up have smoothing capacitors to give something like pure DC.

Much better duty cycle at the top end, say 180A @ 35% @ 40C rather than not specified but probably about 180A @ 7% @ 20C.

Usually more efficient so you can get a bit more out of a 13A plug, which is important to a lot of people.

Usually the option to use then as an MMA inverter.


The problems are the complexity, the cost of getting them fixed and questions over reliability.

Well of course the term "pure DC" has no place in a discussion of practical matters where some precision of expression is intended. A brief reflection on the discrete nature of charge should reveal that it is a simplifying abstraction intended to make the mathematics of electronics and electromagnetism tractable.

Current is essentially a statistical phenomenon and we should be specifying a time averaged mean and describing the noise and periodic deviations about that mean......................................
