Hotmail has started putting valid Emails in the Junk folder, so Thunderbird isn't downloading them!

I've decided to get my own domain name to get control over my emails and have some space for file storage &c

Any suggestions for good suppliers?

You won't get any hosting with your domain name, that will be extra, However if you get your Domain Name i'll give you some free hosting with CPanel access, mainly because i'm a nice old boy

I've used 123-reg for a few domains, and namecheap.com for .com domains.

Also used 123-Reg a while, 10 yrs or more. Looks 'happy shopper' but has good control at the back end. I'd not use them for hosting or email though, although they do offer it. Would buy some half-decent hosting and point the domain there. You'll likely get control over Spam Assassin settings or a similar tool, and choice of POP (download email, the trad way) or IMAP (online folders).
Can recommend Inno Hosting for inexpensive quality, used them among others for a few yrs now.

I've used orbital.net for the last 15+yrs. Unlimited email alias, and hosting for 50quidish.

Although I don't use the web hosting only use the email so looking for somewhere else as the invoice is due. Gerry??

Same here dont use hosting as such just wanted to download emails and send.
Bought last domain from webTapestry 18 month ago, sure its £36 pa hosting.
No problem sending 200meg of data its usually the receivers server.

I use 1&1 here for hosting. Although, I hear it is not as good over there for high-volume sites.

Most hosting packages have free or discounted domain registry. My $9.99/mo hosting package gives me 5 free domains (and unlimited subdomains), 3000 email addresses and gobs of storage and bandwidth.

They have packages starting for $3.99/mo with 1 free domain.

I use it with email clients like Thunderbird but it also has webmail for when I'm away.

I was with 1&1 and found their support was dreadful when things went wrong and when I left they tried to charge me a ridiculous amount for domain transfer - over -£100 for a service that should be free if I remember correctly.

In general it's best to have your domain registered with a different company than your hosting. Godaddy or 123 are both fine, imo. For hosting I've tried a few and find dreamhost the best.

I realise hosting & domains are different, I'll be looking for hosting as well as I prefer to keep independent of my ISP as a move may me imminent!

Agree about 1and1. They have no idea at all about customer service, even when you complain they ignore you. My eshop is hosted with them and it is the biggest load of rubbish. I am in the process of setting up an alternative with Eclipse, so I can just seamlessly switch when ready. NOW I can pick up the phone, not pay premium rate and speak to someone in my own language who knows what I am talking about. Their eshop is much better. One of my beefs with 1and1 is that they continually SPAM me with web pages embedded in email. At the top is a directive to adjust MY settings. A formal complaint received a response detailing how to alter my email client to display HTML. So professional eh?

Few co's have worse reps than 1&1, Fasthosts being one that has actually managed that.

Also, it depends what's wanted, but the better hosts are not companies who's business is mainly something else i.e. domains or connectivity. And there's zillions of dirt cheap hosts who are resellers of someone else's hosting, which is itself using someone else's data centre. A food chain going on.
If price is most important then go for it but expect a compromise on uptime and support. Could be fine for a bit of basic email provision or a small basic website.

Like I said, 1&1 does not have a good rep over there. Here I have had them for many years with no problems. Tech support has been good.

I wonder if they are just reselling someone else's hosting over there.

I started with them after they built another $25mil data center and offered free hosting for a year.

A lot of 123-reg customers, myself included, migrated to domainmonster.com which I have to say is a cut above in terms of the control it gives over domain administration.

Fasthosts eh? Just up the road from me. I have been tempted to go in there and give them a piece of my mind, but I can't spare it.

They are using 1and1 for the backbone I believe and between them, they must have hosted the whole world's SPAMmers. Eventually they blocked my email addresses because i was sending them SPAM reports about once a day. They seemed to regard themselves as a "bullet proof host" and I feel that they had no problem with SPAM provided the money kept coming in.

tony, do you mean buy it from 123 for instance and use someone else? Iv no idea when it comes to email and hosting
