I have a Clarke 151EN which works perfectly with .6mm wire and gas on 1mm sheet. When I go to .8mm gassless wire (polarity reversed) and start welding on 2mm thick steel at a higher voltage, the output runs for 2-3 seconds or so, then cuts out for maybe 1/2 second and then does another 2-3 seconds. I'm pretty sure it's not wire speed that's the problem as the outage is too long considering the speed the wire is coming through and in any case I've removed the gas shroud and am working at 20mm 'stick-out' so I can see pretty well what's going on.
Is this normal? indicative of a potential problem? Could it be unstable input power and if so is there a potential of damaging the MIG? (haven't noticed lights flickering but then I've got me helmet on and probably wouldn't notice.)
Also, I use the wire speed calculator for guidance, but how should I expect gasless wire to affect the suggested settings?
