Interior gas pipe - on the surface or embedded in the wall?

I make that 1 'mishap' about every 19 months

On the other hand if your 1000-to-1 rule was true, you must have drilled 13000 holes in 40 years*. That's 1.6 holes per day, you must get some hellish tea-breaks

* I have assumed you take 12 weeks holiday a year, as per most tradesmen

i wish i get 2 weeks off per year can easily afford more but when u work 4 yourself the work piles up when u return moneys not everything

Get the thing cut off !!! and re layed. You don't want anything going BANG do ya. Always surface mount gas pipes.

Last time I did some gas work I spoke to a plumber first (he'd installed my gas fire previously), he said as long as he could see all the joints he was happy for me to do everything myself.

He came, gave the joints a check and when he was happy turned the gas on a tested for leaks.

Wether this is legal or not is a different matter but if it's safe to me that's all that counts, the in-laws have just had a central heating system fitted and all the pipes are external, looks a right mess with pipes and trunking everywhere, proper bodge!

all down to the fitter certifying the work... because of liability issues (and the potential loss of registration/retraining) most are not happy doing this these days.

I used to do all my (and my employers) gas work at one time.... now it just costs too much unless you do it full time

And if it is copper pipe, needs to be completly protected from the cement/plaster, as it corrodes it. Usually by buying the sleeved stuff.

cover it with duct tape in walls or buy the yellow plastic coated copper pipe or sleeve it with waste pipe if u are realy fussy

Cheers - duct tape it is, then. Just been checking on eBay and there's 'Gas Identification Tape' in yellow with black text - is that suitable or necessary?

Might be the stuff that you put over buried pipe in a trench, so the next guy realizes what he is digging into.

Out of curiosity, what are the rules for connections in UK? Where I used to live, it was hard solder only and no hidden joints. Tripped over some British workers doing the gas in a friend's restaurant. All soft solder and they were plastering over the joins (without testing). Asked them about it and was told it was 'up to standard'. None of them had any certs and clearly had not read the rules. They were risking a goal sentance, but of course, didn't know that either.

Might sound a bit silly question, But putting a strip of yellow plastic over it with gas on it then plastering over it ,, hows that going to stop you/people drilling through it in time????

it wont .the idea of putting id tape saying gas on it is to identify pipes run along side with water and heating pipes and other services . duct tape over the pipe is only to stop chemical atack off the plaster

Our engineer's use Copper sleeving, it's grey in colour.The acids in mortar will
break the copper down.

if in cement/concrete then must be ducted, sleeved, plastic covered or denzo tape, gaffa is ok in render or plaster.

in the uk you can soft solder & bury, but must be pressure tested before use

Having agonised over this for what seems like ages, I've finally come up with a pipe route that doesn't involve burying the pipework in plaster and is actually easier to do than the route I was originally going to use.

Or rather, the wife did... I was busy telling her my plans when she butted in (no change there, then) and said 'why don't you just drill a hole through there and run it along there?'

While I was getting ready to deliver a withering 'you really don't understand, do you' type putdown, it slowly dawned on me that she was right. The horror...

So thanks for all the replies (I've certainly learned a lot), but I believe I now have a Cunning Plan.

for god sake....never let ther find out....
