Interesting refusal of refund...

Last week, I needed to make some fixings into concrete, about four inches thick. The purpose was to install a 2m stand with a plate on the bottom, which has to be level although the concrete isn't.

I sent my man down to Southwest Fasteners in Gloucester, who have always given us good service to get some chemical anchors that I had discussed with them on the phone. The resin phials were too long for the job but as they hadn't got any suitable sleeve anchors, I decided to see if they would just do, even at over a fiver each. A test hole was drilled, showing that there was insufficient depth and so some sleeve anchors were purchased elsewhere to sort the job.

I sent the chemical anchors back earlier, to be met with the statement, "We don't accept returns". Pressed further I was informed that due to their ISO 9000 registration, returns cannot be accepted as the stock cannot be traced and they can't know if the goods have been used or not.

I am awaiting a phone call from someone a bit higher up the food chain....

If you drilled a test hole anyway, why did you buy the full number of phials in advance?

Because we wanted to go armed with the kit and just do it. It looks unprofessional to keep making return visits.

But you had to go back anyway after 'purchasing the sleeve anchors somewhere else'.

Bit annoying they wouldn't take them back, but you have to admit some fault for going right ahead and purchasing the entire number required before testing the fit - especially as you had your doubts in the first place. Just good business sence isn't it.

FWIW I have hundereds of £ - probably over £1k worth of stock kicking around here from jobs that didn't go well, or I misjudged things, just part of running a business.

I'm under the impression that distance selling regs gives a CONSUMER the right to a refund if returned within a certain timeframe, however if you're buying as a company, and hence are a "professional", these rules may not apply.

You are right buy something over the counter and they are not obliged to take it back and give a refund

Yes, with the strict letter of the SOGA, I have no rights. However, I would have thought that as I am a regular customer, asking for goods to the value, that there would be some sort of consideration. My request for a return call went ignored too. Sad really, as I would far rather shop locally, than Ebay. We do have another specialist slightly closer, Allcap who stock a wide range. They provided the sleeve anchors I needed, so will be using them in future.

I've dealt with Allcap, for possibly the last 30 years, don't buy fasteners anywhere else. I was regularly in glos so wasn't really a problem. Now I try to get there when in the area as my workshops about 25 miles away

With sleeve anchors you drill a 12mm hole for a10mm bolt it's far better to use through bolts ie.
12mm hole 12 mm bolt knock em in tighten up finito

I use the injectable resins for bolt fixing, they have come down a huge amount in price:
