Interesting Little Chuck

Hi this little gadget came in a box with lots of other bits and pieces when I bought my lathe it is inscribed the cushman chuck co, It's a well made little item, the centre post can slide in and out and can be held in position with a tiny grub screw set into the side I'm guessing it may be something to do with woodturning? can anyone identify it's true use.

It's a bell punch, used for centre-punching the end of round stock.

As Pete says, a bell punch. You might be able to get a glass rod with a crosshair that fits the hole so it can be used as an optical centre punch too.
