Folks do take annual leave at he back end of Christmas. Also lots of folks can work at home, you can access e-mail and all the servers and files as if you are in the office.
So lesson one pidgeon chit welder, don't spout unless you know the facts.....

Its unfortunate that people cannot make it into work, no doubt some people genuinely cant get in but I know that some just jump on the band wagon and decide not to bother. Either way, its exactly what the UK Economy doesnt need right now. They recon its cost over 1Bn so far

A mate of mine used to work for the Highways Dept, (may still) he tried for yrs to get on the Salting, as they got paid regardless of whether they went out or not, of coarse there was time when they were out all day/night but not very often.
Havn't been to work since tues, so thinking i should get in and make up some hours, got a lift to my car and dug it out this morning.
But
The penultimate road to the factory never gets plowed or gritted and its got a reasonable hill. Got to work, got stuck in the car-park, nipped in and left some notes on the jobs for my mate to get on with if i can't get in on monday, then drove home before the sun came out and put a slick finish on the road (that would freeze when the sun goes down)
In short, just 'cos i could get to work, doesn't mean that i'd be able to get home again!
I'm on the clock, and don't see that it's unfair to not be paid for when i'm not at work.
Plus i've got the ends of a flu so i can't even enjoy the snow without regretting it for days

It's amazing who has made it to work. I was worried about oil supply for our boiler. It's been cold you know and we've used half a tank of oil since before Christmas (rented house, zero insulation, and zero chance of me funding insulation on a contact with 2 month notice, but that's another matter). And we had a healthy looking half a tank back then so I didn't feel the need to refill.
Since then I've been getting nervous, and I was worried the tankers (which are prone to poor grip) wouldn't bother to turn up until the mile of ice on our road melted, but today at 4:30 one arrived! What a relief - and on a Saturday afternoon - hats off to them!

Our work's 'adverse weather' policy states that if we make it to work them we'll be paid for a full day no matter how late we are, if we don't turn in then we don't get paid.
I only have a 6 mile journey but others have 20 or 30 miles so it is a little unfair on them but I suppose it deters people from taking the mick.

We have done quite well with only one or two not getting in last week. What I thought quite funny was the chaps who own BMW's getting stuck on the frozen carpark turning up in their wives small front wheel drive cars the following day.
In my experience the real reason a lot of sites close "due to elf and safety reasons" is the thought or threat of litigation from students/public/customers. If your risk assessments and actions aren't bang on and they have a slip trip or fall you could find the LLP solicitors on your case.
The maximum payout for a serious injury could be around £30k. A risk which most schools, colleges and public organisations won't take.
A sad state of affairs, gone are the days of common sense and fair play.
For every one you have who will apply common sense there are a couple more who are looking to make a few quid at your expense.
This is the real reason sites are closed when they could open.

HERES A GOODUN the small town where i live all the shopkeepers used to clear the snow in front of there shops. they cant now because if anyone slips on the pach they have cleared they can be sued . only the councill can do it but they dont 
but they dont Isn't it funny how people whinge about those who work in the public sector having it cushy? If that is the case, then whose the mug? I am a public sector worker and I can tell you, when I am lying on my death bed I know that my conscience will be clear that I owe Mr & Mrs Joe Public nothing ... absolutely zilch. I actively discouraged my daughter from working in the public sector as serving the 'Great' British public as a job stinks.

I know it's been gone a while now but I need a rant. Of all the people I work with, I'm furthest away, about 10miles for me. I have 3 miles of untreated roads before I get to a road that was anywhere near driveable, and the Tuesday & Wednesday were my days off. It just so happens that I drive a Landrover.
At 7:30 on the Tuesday I got a call from lad due to open up saying he couldn't get his car off the drive & could I go and open up. So I went. it took me 45mins to get there, but I did it. The lad who should have been opening up showed up at lunch time, and moaned that he had to walk in (1/2 mile) then 20 mins later declared he was going for his lunch! he then proceded to moan when I went home on my day off. He phoned me again later that day to try and TELL me that I would have to open up on the Wednesday, My response as you can imagine was not favourable!

I just found out the other day its the law in france that when it snows you have to clear the public path in front of your property. None of this legal liability nonsense for not doing it, its mandated.
We've got verglas today, I fell over trying to get in the landie and spent most of school run in it sideways , hardly any other kids in school and no school bus but the teachers were in.
IMHO, anyone that can work from home as effectively as going in (IT, sales etc, anyone who doesnt do things physically on equipment thats not portable basically) who've set up a home office should be doing just that anyway.
Its silly in a way that we all truck ourselves to central cattle sheds and loose hours a week and burn fuel etc travelling there just so someone can see bums on seats because they want to see something tangeable for their money. Most of the time Im more effective working remote because I get less distraction and Ive got better kit in my home office, and when I need a bit of kit or to set up a test lab I just buy it and build it and do it instead of wasting days getting it signed off, allocated space and connectivity, pat tested etc.
The only real problem with this, is it relies on you having some self discipline and actually working when its required. I actually find myself working more hours than I bill mostly too, since I tend to be thinking about a problem out of hours and just wander into my office with a 2am brainstorm or the like. I generally find this reflected when it comes to contract renewal time...

Same in Germany.
There was a lawyer on the radio saying that this liability issue was an urban myth, and if you didn't do something stupid like wash the snow away with water when it was freezing you'd be OK.
He did use the phrase "I think" quite a lot though.
They should have had 2 lawyers on, we'd get 3 different opinions then.
