That's not based on reality is it ? "Q. I couldn't get to work because of the snow. Can my boss dock my pay?" If you're not on the clock you are not getting paid sunshine. Where do these people think everyone works, in a bank ?

It snowed quite heavily in my corner of the country on Tuesday night. No problems for me as I only have a 5 mile drive to work, but a couple of the lads who have 20 or so miles to travel went home early and were told to book it as holiday. I'd rather keep my holiday and lose a few hours pay, it wouldn't make much of a difference... I get paid peanuts anyway

Interesting facts here......a few years back we had a similar thing where I worked. I battled 17 miles to get in taking nearly 2 hours and we got sent home after a couple. Not everyone made it.......some coming from the opposite direction had had to walk home the night before, about 10 miles, one person more. The boss had scarped early because he knew thw weather was closing in. He never made it the next day, coming from the same direction as those who had walked.........because they never tried to get in he didn't pay them........I got paid. If your boss cant get in and he gets paid so should you, in my opinion, otherwise it is double standards!

I work in IT, we have been told not to go into the office, but to work from home... We pretty much all have laptops, so it works ok for us... but we don't have an excuse to go sledging
Yes you did, you were field testing laptops to see how it copes with a challenging range of environmental conditions, afterall, if you didn't do it, who would?
Being self employed and having to go out and find the work,do the work then invoice for said work, then having to wait ages to get paid, especially if the work is for the local authority, it is understandable why some are aggrieved with local authority staff when they see friends,relatives that work for the authorities being able to take a sicky, or getting paid for not turning up. when they cant.
The sweeping statement you refer to I took as being a swipe against them and not against the person on the ground eg the lads and lasses on the gritters etc which are getting a bit of overtime in, which I expect is welcome in this recession, make hay while the sun shines kind of thing.
What are the facts about absenteeism in the local authority's.
My manager phoned me on Tuesday morning, said place was shut. That was the second day back after the Christmas holiday. Every day since he's phoned me and we've been off all week. I only have a five mile trip to work, could have made it in no problem but was told to stop off. We can't expect students to travel in these conditions (I work at a college). Been great fun playing in the snow with my little fella but wouldn't like to think it's cost me a weeks wage! I'd have walked to work if I had to. So, what about us folk who were told to stop off but were more than willing to travel? Also, due to the time missed, we'll all have to catch up so that will mean extra work when we do get back. Not moaning here, I gotta admit I enjoyed the extra week off!

I've worked out in it 12 hours every day since the 28th, except new years day when I worked only 7hrs, up until yesterday when I drove 300 miles home. Another 4 guys have been working 12 hour nights, down to -8.
Mostly, it only stops you if you want it to but then everyone is different and some people just can't cope with it physically or psychologically. Of course if your place of work is shut there's little point going in.

Edinburgh bin men spat the dummy oot Si, stating can't work on H&S grounds. They are really not happy at council making changes to their contracts, in some cases making them re-apply for their job, hopefully gone are the days when they finish at say midday, then head for their next job for a few hours driving taxis, which is fact BTW. Edinburgh refuge collection is one good reason to privatise, and I do not say the latter easily, these guys are taking the ****!!

there not the only ones firemen do it as well . all have other jobs. i do 8 hours a day .then on call overnite and im sh ././././ged out .funny how they can do it day in and day out. mind u they say they cant manage on ther poor pay

Think you'll find all the Bankers made it in - they get paid on results or they're out the door. It's teachers & local government staff that 'sack it' at the slightest excuse
I'd go along with that observations , Munchkin has not yet been back to school this year , due to snow & ice??? We took a run out on Tuesday , Thursday & Friday past three teachers homes .. roads clear all the way to school as are all the local villages , but 3 inches of snow still on top of their cars & window scrfeens & a sniggle of snow around the car where it is parked.
We get a PTA member call this afternoon .. School closed on Monday as heating has frozen and conked , temp school set up in local village hall on Monday if prob not repaired.
Yeah three weeks in an unattended school with little heat on does kind of end up with that sort of result .. just like it has every time its snowed and was unoccupied for a couple of days.

I have been to Swansea four times this week yet the mid level Sybil Serpent next door to us has stayed home , being unable to reach the DVLA due to "snow on her drive".
Which unlike me she can't be bothered to clear away for 20 odd feet to get on the clean salted road & onto clean dry still salted M4 , then on almost direct to the DVLA front doors.
But she does manage to drive down the local village shops or to visit her mum & dad on a daily basis
