No, its modified, someone has shortened the rod, normally they are symmetrical with no grinding. So it's normal then? That would make sense....kinda. More sense would be to forge the cutout in the rod.
No I found it on one of my Face book groups and thought it was interesting.
I also used several beemers, ex-police R80RT's, in the 1980's for despatch riding. The huge fairings made them genuinely dangerous on a bridge or flyover, if there was much crosswind.. it was more like sailing a small boat on a rough sea, wrestling with the handlebars bars to keep in lane![]()
shortened to use different pin height pistons?
I was told that by a German I worked with at Triumph Hinckley back in 1990 when my transport was a R100RS, they also called CX500's die Gullepumpe or sewage pump.@Morrisman The box heads call them the 'gummikuh' which means 'the rubber cow'![]()
Thanks, though do fancy getting an R100RS again too....

won't part with it well will but wants stupid money for it
Back in the 70's an American chap used to bore and stroke the Honda XL350 to 500cc using the standard conrod by heating the middle and compressing it in a press. It looked odd but he never had a failure.

i know of one in a shed not moved for at least 10 years
think it's a RT though green fairing with standard bars

he also has that cruiser BM made as well
This is where I am with this , cant think of another reason to cutnshut a conrod. Its a forging at the end of the day so it should weld without compromising the integrity of the rod.

Does it have to be a BMW motor? Other aircooled flat twins are available.... e.g. Panhard 850, 60 BHP.I've been looking for an airhead motor
But the prices of airhead bits have rocketed in the last few years
It's not often I disagree with what you type @80b, but in this instance I do - the weld will undergo cyclic compression and tension stresses, as well as any side load if the guy hasn't got it "cock on". Maybe for shows, pootling around on idle jets it might survive, but I wouldn't bet a penny on it surviving the full throttle treatment for long.
I like seeing a welded repair, but this is a bit beyond imho.
I had a Ural, before they got trendy, and it had a better gear-change than the BMW 2-valves! Half the power though..I've been looking for an airhead motor to 'warm up' and make reliable a Russian/Chinese sidecar outfit if I can find a reasonably priced non running rig here in Portugal- the bureaucracy makes it impossible to just stick a chair on any old bike.
But the prices of airhead bits have rocketed in the last few years. Oilheads everywhere cheap as chips, but airheads not at all. Was going to be my big project for this year!
