I work for the EKC Group which is a group of 6 colleges based in Kent. As a Resourcing Manager, one of the more challenging roles to hire, is a teacher in welding and fabrication!

Basically, we're looking for someone with industry and teaching experience to inspire the next generation. We have weekend teaching positions, full-time positions and senior/entry level roles!

Yep, good chance if you know enough on the subject to teach it, and in good health, you're probably earning that on basic hours, before any overtime.

I know the (ex)professional welder tutor I had at college, had to give up doing it full time due to eyesight issues, but he certainly knew his stuff.

The other tutor was a vehicle lecturer who done the extra training in order to teach the basic welding courses, but he openly admitted his welding experience was doing the usual welding up of rust buckets in the past, and learning how to do the required test pieces for the basic C&G certificates. He wasn't going to be teaching anything more than the basic 2-4day welding courses that most employers want in order to tick a box that people are qualified to use a welder.

You are correct but in my experience companies try to keep them and work with them as good experienced trades people are difficult to find

When I did an nvq 3 and some pipe tickets, the college got me, supposedly a "student" to teach total newbies the basics of gas welding.. I guess they were a bit short of staff to say the least !
I didn't mind as they were a nice bunch of lads, both staff and students, and happy to help out.. but with all the bullsht hoops to jump thru nowadays I wouldn't fancy getting involved at all.

Its a hard sell when on one hand you are telling prospective students the mega bucks they can earn, while offering peanuts to someone who knows how to earn the mega bucks.
While been told what do to by someone who doesnt know one end of a electrode from the other, earning far more.

Can a teacher on those wages afford an apartment within 1/2 hour commute ?
Afford a car on those wages ?

Apparently, in that part of England average house price is £418,731. Flats an average of £355,666. Renting would be similarly painful on £31k, unless you're single maybe?

Interesting- I got those numbers off the right move site - had a look, and once you get past the student, studio and retirement flats, cheapest was 110k for 1 bedroom flat…

Ive worked with 2 lads that went on to teach at a big college for welding, aware that theres avenues to make bigger money...i guess some get sick of the grind.
Im actually supprised you struggle to fill the role with how so many are hanging up there masks in this game.

I’ve got to say, 31K isn’t *that* bad for a teaching role, teaching is generally not well paid. Pensions schemes are usually fairly good too.

I’m sure there are pro welders out there raking it in, but unless you are working on Hinckley or HS2, I don’t know how realistic that actually is.
Around here a MIG monkey is on about £11 – 12p/h and if you can TIG you can add a couple of quid to that, but it is still less than 31K. Agency work pays more, but agency work also sucks.
To be fair my area is rubbish for wages in general, but I’ve never seen any welding jobs advertised with remuneration rates that make me want to rush out and retrain!

Lecturing is going to be a far less physically demanding role and the environment is going to be cleaner, warmer and generally a lot more comfortable. That being said, teaching is not easy, very stressful and a lot of paperwork and politics.
I actually think it’s quite a good thing that jobs gets posted on here, as it could suit somebody in the right situation.

Couldn't agree more - we had a recent similar situation a few weeks ago where it seemed like the prevailing responses were overwhelmingly negative.
Nobody is marching people to the OP's door and forcing them to take a job so would it not be easier to just go "Interested? Yes - I'll drop them a PM / No - I'll walk on by and read a different thread"?

Honestly if it wasn't for the location I'd be interesting depending, just because as someone else said, I'm in a postion where I don't want to risk my eyesight welding daily any more, after being off work for 18 months having surgeries on them - regardless of the money difference.

My post was saying it’s a bit of a vague job description

If they narrowed down what they are looking for it might attract the right candidate as opposed to people thinking they are after a multi process welding teacher which must be thin on the ground
