Inter clearcoat flatting

I have just painted a wing with COB and had some runs in the laquer which I can't burnish out for some reason. The laquer is probably still a bit soft I suppose, so have flatted back to 1200 wet. Is that fine enough to lay another lacquer coat, or do I need to go finer?

Ideally block it 800 or you will lose intercoat adhesion.

What Nick said, in fact you can quite happily flat with 600 (wet) when re-clearing

I would use wet, stops the paper clogging

It was, I should Have quoted you.I guess we are all different but I never use 800 unless I'm going to use base.

Surely the finer the better for overcoating clear? That's why I was mistakenly going to 1200.

Its a fine balancing act. You need to provide a good key but without getting scratches showing through. If I do a direct gloss coat, I may use 600 but if I use basecoat or over coat with clear I would personally go no further than 800. Just my opinion and M.O

The thread title infers that you're in the middle of the clearcoating process when you've noticed the runs - if that's the case follow norsa and langy's advice before carrying on. On the other hand if you've finished the clearcoating, i.e already put on say three coats before discovering the runs then, as you've already flattened to 1200 you could polish using a rotary polisher and and cutting compound like Farecla G3. Leave the paint to harden for a few days before using the rotary polisher.

That's what I have always done Nick and as you know I'm a fussy bugger, personally if someone wanted to use 60grit I couldn't care less !!! I gave my opinion and that's all you can do.
