If you have a Category S write-off that you have purchased back from your own insurance what is required to make it road legal again? Do you have to contact the DVLA and inform them i am asking as a mate has a car that he wants to put back on the road and it seems to have very little damage, I could see no chassis damage just the rear plastic apron and alloy bumper behind it, It is a mini one estate.

You used to have to have a Vehicle Identity Check before you could get the logbook back, but that was dropped in 2015 (after we had to pay for one for Mrs Robo's car ) I think it is just recorded on the Motor Insurance Database as a Cat S these days and an HPI type check will show it.

That would be good if that is the case as he can get it back on the road quick, The damage is fairly simple and i think the quote to fix it through the insurance was £4500.

if it is a cat s the v5 should be be retained or destroyed by them ( the insurance company ) and as such you should have to apply to dvla using a v62 i think it is for a new one under the current rules and it will say vehicle has been salvaged in the notes section of the new or replacement v5 document

Nothing. There is no official inspection to go through.

Although there are some companies can give you a structural report for about £300 upwards. Not really needed unless its a high value vehicle.

Sometimes the car insurance companies will ask for this report before insuring it, but its very rare. And some wont even insure it... Again rarely though.

I was expecting to see bent up chassis bits but the only thing that was damaged was the spare wheel well and the pushed out by hand, The main inpact was on an alloy bumper that deformed and the back doors were panel damaged but still opened and locked.

Spare wheel well is structural as it's part of the rear impact crumple zone

VIC check went the way of the dinosaur years ago - think I remember reading that it actually caught something ridiculously low like three dodgy cars.

close think was 36 out of nearly 1.5 million vehicles of which most of those were that poorly done would of been apparent at mot or equivalent. used to have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for appointment near me in birmingham and was complete farce for what they actually did

Hi, It was an identity check not a quality check, as said an MOT would have done that (hopefully).

Exactly correct as stated by colnerov the check was to check the vin number / chassis number and engine number and any other reference numbers not to verify the quality of repair. in fact sometimes the vehicles being checked were not even fully repaired vehicles seemed to remember the vehicle just needed to be able to move under its own power within the checking area. all the data could be checked in an MOT enviroment .

Now cat s needs nothing to put it back on the road.

Would re-mot it to make sure it's ok but provided you have a v5 in your name to 're tax it. (Cat s are free to reapply, Cat n are £25 to reapply)

Besides that jump in and drive it.

We had to MOT my daughter's Corsa and take it for a VIC to the lorry test centre. That was a few years ago and the VIC has since been dropped as it was ineffective as a way of preventing ringing.

That's where we took Mrs Robo's car, when the guy came for the keys I asked him if he wanted me to show him where the bonnet release was (hidden in the upper glovebox) he said of course not, we know about all makes and models, 5 minutes later he came back to ask me where the bonnet release was

Worst bit was "is it Japanese or Spanish as they use different batteries."
