Where I work they have lifting beams installed above motors/gearboxes to allow them to be changed quickly and safely to keep any production stoppages to a minimum. I saw a new one yesterday that I don't think will get approved by the insurance inspectors.
Yes, they have completely cut through the flange and into the web
and no, the clamps do not bridge the gap in the flange. Stupid thing is, it's sited a bit low to allow a chain block to be used and there's a couple of beams a metre above that it could have been hung from
